It turns out to have been an incompatibility between the mSATA drive and adapter. I swapped in a no-name brand drive from Amazon and it works! I was able to do a new install from the USB stick to the new mSATA drive with no problems!
I copied over quite a bit from my backup. I'm going to start another thread with some of my issues.
