I've finally decided to move to 3.9. I had my setup comfy so didn't bother until now. I figured I'd do s fresh install and then later install Chrysalis pack again. All went well it seemed, I allowed the installer to do it's thing with default settings. Reboot, briefly see an apple drive symbol, then just a plain grey screen.

I seemed to remember to hold the CTRL button if frequency was out of range, no help. I tried 3 different monitors including an NEC Multisync, no help. Looks like I am dead in the water for the time being.

This is a PowerMac G5 with a Radeon 9800 (PC flashed). Would a good guess be 3.9 nukes the reflashed card? This card never benched well so I've been thinking of replacing, but sucks to be dead in the water. Could it be anything else?

    -Edit-
Now the system seems to have gone belly up.

    -Edit 2-
    Fixed, see below.

Does it still boot from the MorphOS installation CD? I don't believe the gfx card being the problem because it worked when you reinstalled the system... more likely some HD issue? Try to boot from the install CD and see if partitions look OK, and maybe try installing again. Or if 3.9 doesn't seem to start working from the HD, boot from the CD and quick format the partitions and restrore your old setup from the backup you of course made before nuking everything.

    Yes.

I did try installing a second time, no change. I'd be surprised if it were a hard drive issue, but anything is possible. I'm not at home in front of the G5, is there some kind of Scandisk type of tool on the MorphOS CD? Or something else?

Quick format won't work, I changed the system partition size :-/

Wow, maybe it is the HD. Too bad SFSDoctor seems to only check the file system. I went ahead and removed all 3 partitions and created a single one, then started a format with verify. After about 10 minutes it still isn't to 1%. I don't have any spare SATA HDs it seems. I guess I will be making a trip to Best Buy this weekend.

Well it looks like I may be up poop creek here. I just went and bought a new SATA drive, installed MorphOS 3.9 and it is doing the exact same thing, booting to a gray screen.

You might want to try to boot it manually from OF prompt (use the USB-guide as reference).

What happens when you select the HD after starting with ALT pressed ? Does the partition even show up there ?

I tried that and it did the same thing.

Well since I posted my last message things just went from bad to worse. I think this G5 just went belly up. When testing I did a couple more resets and noticed the startup chime was not playing through, cutting off half way through. Now I am getting no video signal output at all and no chime at all. I found an old original Mac edition Radeon 9650 and no luck with that either.

Looks like I'll have to dig up my old registered MDD-FW800 and use that for a while until I get this G5 sorted out. I'm guessing that probably means looking for a new G5.

Indeed, this is a mild inconvenience. I already have it all sorted. Morphzone user doffo is shipping me out a new Dual 2.7Ghz G5 motherboard & CPUs, along with power supply and Radeon X850 to be safe. I should be back up and running by Wednesday or Thursday.

OK I got a new MB, CPUs, PSU and Radeon X800. I initially had the same problem of not booting, but doffo figured it out. He suggested to unplug the CD/DVD drive and she booted right up so the CD/DVD drive is bad. Keep that in mind should someone else have the same problem!

I am happy to be cruising at 2.7Ghz with Radeon X800 now. Will be time to do some benchmarking soon. Now to request a replacement keyfile... :-D

You probably need to register again because you used rerumloa@... as email reference and won't receive any verification mail then.

I thought that was the email I used the last time I registered, which was the G5. I did that because I have major problems receiving email at my old bellsouth email address, especially from Germany and other parts of EU.

I'll do it again when I get home from my bellsouth email address and hope it comes through.

    Thanks.

It's not a problem with the email host - you typoed your email address when doing the registration ;)
