On the anti virus thread somebody provided a link to another thread,

    https://morph.zone/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?forum=3&topic_id=8917&viewmode=flat&sortorder=0&start=20

(Go back on to page 2 not 3)

and on the thread it mentioned the future of MorphOS, ... Adding more updates (memory protection) to MorphOS during a full ISA switch but also there could be a possible 64 bit MorphOS, for the G5 computer?

Is this true? Was it true? Is it still true?

And if not, sorry for the confusion.

Yes, it is true, was true and is still true that these things are mentioned in that thread ;-)

But we have no idea when that will happen. It's such a huge undertaking and to paraphrase one developer: "there is still stuff than can be done with PPC". I don't think they are in a hurry and who can blame them. They got a lot of other stuff that needs to be done with the current API.

Let's enjoy what we have and remember that the Team has not disappointed us yet. When it comes, it will be great ;-)

    Not rushing. Just curious.

Improve API? Like what? Improve the panels to act as a fully functional dock or app launcher, with the inactive windows could be minimized to the panel? And keep the bar on top always visible? Import more of the software? ;-)

What do you mean by this?

The clock bar. With the date and time on it.

It's always visible by default. You have turned it off yourself if it doesn't stay visible on your system. Check IControl settings (Ambient screen titlebar setting).

    Look at the post here
    http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=59765

Its few years old, but looking from today nearly 2015 perspective, we are in "Intermediate future" (upgrading MorphOS 3.x on PowerPC) and its happening beyond my expectations. G5 support is quite mature now, beside gfx, memory limits and cpu core limits existing on other PPC systems.

Long term goal is 64 bit MorphOS on ARM64 or x64, not PPC64.
I suppose that will be MorphOS 4, so few more major tweaks on PPC before big leap.

It would be nice if MorphOS 4 would remain both PPC32,PPC64 and that future ISA (ARM64/x64) before complete switch (MorphOS 5?) but that is all just a wild guess for now.

However, it needs a lot of work on overcoming current limits, adopting to new platform and some other additional drivers like e.g. modern Radeon and why not, nVIDIA gfx card drivers at least. I suppose it will start with last drivers developed on PPC and recompiled to that new ISA, and then gradually add drivers, or target just specific hardware in early days (similar MorphOS 2.x strarted with Pegasos and Radeon 9200, to support many boards and graphics now)

As those army posters would say "We need your support now" (for better future to happen, I would add).

In simple words - instead of trying to take patching the OS path (like AmigaOS 4 does try), MorphOS teams believes its better to do complete jump forward.

Okay I will try to fix the clock bar settings.

That makes sense about not doing PPC64. Also I had not thought about when they create a 64 bit they will certainly discontinue 32 bit even if it was with PowerPC. But that makes even more sense. I guess I am unfamiliar with which G5 are 32 bit and which are 64 bit.

Perhaps they are or will be secretly developing the New MorphOS but won't release it or certainly won't announce it until New MorphOS is completely functional.

They have my support. They will have my support unless they sell out and turn into a heavy OS such as Mac OS X et. al.

MorphOS 2.0 supports more boards and graphics cards than that.

Omitting PPC32 support would mean no portable PPC hardware any longer, thus wouldn't make sense in my book.

    > I guess I am unfamiliar with which G5 are 32 bit and which are 64 bit.

All G5 processors (PPC970) support both 64-bit and 32-bit. MorphOS uses the 32-bit mode of the G5.

Have you not considered the possibility that they will keep supporting PPC and have a x86 or ARM system too? :-)

Only time will tell. The rest is just speculation.

None of the morphos team members has said that they
Made a choice. But for développement i imagine its easier to work on g5 because of the already work done.

we hope to continue to support fully the G5 computers are very high performance and can be bought on the cheap!
