I want to get a SSD for my G5 dual core 2.7 GHz. And I also want to add some USB (by some sort of PCI card I suppose).

I don't want to buy the wrong hardware, so I want to ask you what I should look for. Or better, if you know some place with the hardware I need that ship to Sweden. Thanks!

You could probably check maximum bus speeds, and compare them to speed of various SSD units. Wouldn't be surprised, if fastest units promise (!=deliver) faster speeds than your G5 can provide.

Also, SSD drives get large speed boost from TRIM support after using for a longer while (filesystem feature, basically it marks deleted blocks as such, so the drive knows they can be re-used for any other data) - None of the filesystems supported by MorphOS support this (afaik), which reduces the speed benefit you're going to get. They're still faster than mechanical drives though.

As for PCI, probably it's enough if it just has the supported chipset (see documentation on the official MorphOS page).

Thanks. G5 is SATA, right? Are all SSD SATA as well?

No SSDs come with IDE too.
On a G5 you need to be extra careful as it just won't work with most SATA-SSDs being SATA3. I ended up useing a Seagate hybrid drive, which speed wise is just as good after it learned what blocks to keep in it's 4GB of flash.

The official MorphOS page has no information on supported USB chipsets . I guess that's because in theory every EHCI-compliant chipset should work.

    Yes, SATA1 to be precise.

    > Are all SSD SATA as well?

No, as Kronos said. And regarding selecting between different SATA SSDs, the remarks given in your older thread are valid still, of course:

I had completely forgotten about that thread.

    @Everyone

Can I expect a SATA2 or a SATA2 compatible SATA3 SSD to work? One site mentioned Intel 320 series SSD.

You cannot use a SATA 3 SSD because that the G5 has SATA 1 connections and SATA 3 is backward compatible only with SATA 2. SATA 2 is mostly backwards compatible with SATA 1. But the Intel 320 is a safe card and is recommended by most PPC Mac users.

OWC (Other World Computing) has some SSD drives that is worth looking at aswell that is made entirely for the sole purpose of G5s.

That was my impression as well. But I'm not technical, so I prefer the opinions of people I can ask questions to directly.

Intel 320 Sata 2 is very simple to find on Ebay. Unless you guys say I shouldn't buy it, I will buy one of those :-)

The auction page has conflicting information. On one hand it says "Intel 320 Series", which means SATA2 and thus a good buy for you, but on the other hand it says "SSDSC2BW120A401", which means Intel 530 series with SATA3 and thus a bad buy for you.

Good thing I asked here first then :-)

OK, if any of you who knows these kind of stuff and 5 minutes to spare, could you go check on Ebay for something purchase worthy for me? Preferbly within the EU.

    Much obliged!!

It also says SATA 6gb/s in the headline :)

Yes, even the auction title is self-contradictory.

I got my new Intel 320 120 GB SSD today, and installation went without a hitch! The system works a whole lot faster than before. This was a really good buy :-D
