Amigacoin

  • Hello,
I am an Amiga fan since '90s and it is the first time that I write here. So, I started to look Bitcoin world in these months and I thought that may be useful for Amiga community. Therefore I made a (Litecoin) clone called Amigacoin to support our lovely platform. You can read more info and download the client here: www.amigacoin.org
Sorry for crappy graphic, but I am only a programmer.
There are executables and sources for Linux and Windows, very soon it will be available for Mac OS X and I also hope for Amiga (and MorphOS) in the future (but I think there are some difficult libraries to convert - Boost and Berkeley DB for example).
If someone wants some Amigacoins, write me privately, especially who works on this platform. :-)

I'm affraid it will end up the same as hundreds of other altcoins. Forgotten in a year. In my opinion bitcoin client for Amiga would be much more useful.

  • Yes, man, you're right. An Amiga client/wallet is more interesting, but we need to rewrite it completely (Bitcoin/Litecoin code is based on little-endian stuffs) and porting all used libraries, in short it needs a lot of work around for many months and I don't have free time to do it at the moment. Anyway, in opposite to many other cryptocurrencies, Amigacoin is very easy to mine it (there is still a very low difficulty) and most Amiga fans have slow PCs (like the others normal PC/Mac users, too), so it couldn't be a big issue. Finally, I think it's a way to advertise our platform outside its "niche", all people remember it only for old A500/A600s, nobody know about "next-gen" PPC Amiga and other OS like MorphOS and AROS.

If that's the case, you should not release it until you got a NG Amiga mining program finished. Otherwise, by the time there is one it won't be easy to mine anymore for slower computers. I don't really get the point of altcoins, but having one for Amiga is at least a novelty.

Personally, I would prefer a system where people get rewarded with "Amigacoins" for doing something good for the platform rather then just wasting electricity mining. Someone releases a game, get 10 coins, someone does some important code for AROS, get 20 coins, someone invest in new hardware, get 100 coins etc etc. And then people can choose if they want to make some of their goods and services available for Amigacoins. I bet some people would do it in order to encourage development.
Someone (in singular or plural) needs to give away these coins, someone the community trust have a good understanding of things and are honest enough to be trusted by the whole community. But I think thats one of the smaller problems.

    My 2 cents.

I like the initiative shown here but don't see it as practical. However, I'd absolutely like to see a well written, Amiga/MorphOS compatible bitcoin or litecoin client.

After reading about the steps involved to convert a bitcoin wallet private key (a 256 bit integer) into a public key, I wanted to see how far I'd get with the process from scratch. The first, easiest challenge is being able to convert to and from base58 notation...

@Yasu - I prefer the free market solution, supply and demand, put up or shut up.

I don't see how they cancel each other out. It would be one more incentive, and possibly a good one.

The fact that bitcoin is perceived as having value is difficult enough to explain but it's already gotten over that hurdle. Other than pure novelty, where is the value, or even the future possibility of value, in amigacoin? Without value, where is the incentive to accept it as payment? Any why reinvent the wheel? All these copy-cat crypto currencies are meaningless gestures.

I equate the attempts at payment via any of these novelty coins to facebook likes. If a desire to support someone isn't strong enough to translate to actual meaningful support (ie cash), then I would suggest that a well written email expressing appreciation is the way to go.

I agree there. Hence my suggestion of having this as a reward for doing something good for the comminty, and let some kind hearted people give discounts from their HP:s etc in order to give it some real value and purpuse.
