I want to know how much processing power is being used on different G5 systems when watching full HD (1080p) movies. I've read that the 2,7 GHz uses around 35%. How about the rest?

The workload depends heavily on the used video codec. More info:

Currently have a passive cooled 2.7ghz setup. I couldn't get a 1080P to work full speed. The same video at 720P played, but takes about 50% of the CPU the entire time.

And especially bitrate (and probably number of reference frames, and no doubt some other voodoo video encoding stuff).

Any paticular version of mplayer that runs faster than the others?
Any video player capable of playing h.264 besides mplayer?

You won't get faster than MPlayer on MorphOS. And the latest version is the fastest (4% faster than the previous one).
And there *is* h264 1080p contents that plays just fine on G5. http://www.dvdloc8.com/clip.php?movieid=12167&clipid=3 for instance.

    Bitrate indeed.

What about encoding from uncompressed source vs re-encoding from an A/V file previously compressed?
This can get quite complicated when trying to reduce it to a simple phrase like "1080p plays".
