No, whatever instructions you have read are wrong. SMBFS has never required Samba on the same machine. That's the whole point of that little and simple program, you can use it without needing to mess with bloated Samba installation. I've been using both 68k and MorphOS version of SMBFS and it works just fine without full Samba.
