I was able to locate and fix the bug. It wasn't the actual datatype system, but rather something deeper (in certain situations palette indexed bitmap would end up with a stale pointer that would be referenced at FreeBitMap).

The bug has been fixed in the development tree now and will be included in the next MorphOS release (3.0).
