Hi everyone!

I am currently investing time again for Amiga/MorphOS development.
I would like to know if anyone uses the Samba port that is on Aminet
and in that case what you think about it.
Would you use Samba if it where better supported?
Would a NFS solution be better?

I have online IMAP client in my mind right now, is there a need for such tool? SimpleMail is offline IMAP.

The MorphOS-Samba-Port does not seem to be working. Otherwise I would use it.

An idiot proof working Samba would be nice.

Samba is not magic and mounting e.g. Windows drives is quite easy.

A native port of SMBFS is part of MorphOS since 3.6.

smbfs workgroup=MSHEIMNETZ service=//Pentium/Shareddocs/ volume=Shareddocs

All you need to do is replacing Pentium by the computer name you specified during installation. Shareddocs following is name name of the drawer you enabled sharing on. The second Shareddocs is the name the drive should appear on Ambients desktop. Usually identical with the drawer name, but you can specify any name. Just take care it is unique.

Once you execute the line, an icon appears on Ambient and you can use the share.

If you want to auto mount the share, open s:user-network-startup and append

run <>NIL: smbfs workgroup=MSHEIMNETZ service=//Pentium/Shareddocs/ volume=Shareddocs

Just to clarify things here. I am talking about sharing files FROM MorphOS not the other way around. It is getting more and more common that users have more than one system and having a good filesharing option seems like a good idea.

Therefore I use smbfs to mount my second morphos machine and my amigaos4 machine. I felt an improved samba would be a good idea.very

Samba 68K on morphos works pretty well for basic filesharing, its just the configuring that can be a hassle.

When Roadshow 68K was released I did some speedtests with Samba 68K on my Powerbook with gigabit lan from and to a Win7 machine, and got around 30megabyte per second from my ramdisk sambashare to win7 and ~25megabyte per second writespeed to my ramdisk sambashare, if my memory are correct samba68k was faster than smbfs on MorphOS.

I know newer Morphos releases have a native smbfs binary and improvements to the netstack but havent found the time to compare.

I also started writing a new installer for Samba 68K on Morphos, using OWB as a gui and doing a graphical installer with arexx building up the configfiles and copying stuff where its supposed to be, but life got in the way, so I never finished it. It was just a matter of few mouseclicks and you had a working basic samba set up with ram as a share, username&password = samba/samba, but you could add users or shares within the gui presented with OWB...

Forget your samba68k, we want a fresh MorphOS-port of samba.

I once tried to pollute my A1200 with Samba server, it was horrible... it was constantly making writes to hd even if I didn't use it. I guess there's always some checking for samba machines on network and writing stats/configs for it. Bad idea with fragile mem corrupting system like Amiga :)

But if you do some tricks to disable or link those writes out of hd, or write more sane version of the whole server, why not.. but until then I won't be using those standard ports on my machines :) It's enough for me to access those remote shares _from_ MorphOS... or if I use rdesktop, its sharing capabilities look good. I once uploaded movies directly from MorphOS hd to youtube with browser on PC controlled with rdesktop and it went all fine.

Today i was just thinking about a shared network between my two morphos machines. I think thats a pretty good idea youi have :) so yes, i would appreciate if you start working on a new samba :)

Never had any joy with Samba .
The only "success" I ever had was the same as jPV.
Constant diskdrive action on my A1200 with little else happening.

I think yes for MorphOS1.4.5 and AmigaOS4.1 and maybe for AmigaOS3.9. i all depends if i get working tcp/ip stack somewhere i actually have Miami for amiga but i lost keyfile in harddrive crash few days before i do backup.:( Very likely i want use this kind thing.

I also try code someday something for these systems what i list. But AmigaOS3.9 means Classic amiga when i talk my coding in wide subject...
