    I just bought a 2.7 GHz PowerMac 7,3 that is fan-cooled.

Should arrive next week. Will open her up and give it a good look and post some photos if people want?

Go for it. Curious to see what or how the previous went about the conversion. Maybe he got the fans to calibrate so they spin up properly? Mine would error when I tried to calibrate.

    Definately Nik.
I'd like to see what they have done.
I honestly do not trust the idea of water flowing around inside a computer.

Here is a photo from the eBay listing of the insides.

    http://imgur.com/OuSlvEL

This is what he had to say when I asked about what kind of cooling system it has:

    Quote:

    These G5's are fan cooled
They have been checked using Techtool pro
These allows me to adjust the fans9service)
In each case nothing has been necessary
    The G5's are working Perfectly

    hope this answers your question
here is the link for the G5 concerned.

I have the dreaded 2.5ghz DP LCS on the way.
The article on how to clean it up is rather overbearing.
If someone has a simpler cleanup method I'd appreciate it.

    That looks SO clean.
OK, when I setup a G5, I'm ditching the liquid cooling.

Should have everything by saturday I am hoping... It might be a better bet to replace all 4 fans with ones that constantly move air much more quicker and quietly. I tried converting the fans so that they are on at 12v full bore, and they are LOUD! I tried them at 5v, and it barely moves any air. I will report back with temps once the fans come in. Even with a 120mm for the intake side half-assed leaning against the passive coolers on the 2.7ghz, it kept a constant 85.2c the entire time even under load. So all new fans should do the trick. 8-)

    Good point.
That is higher than I would care for.
For instance, the processor in my iBook is running at 45 degrees C as we speak.

    Thats mighty damn hot.
    :-(

Having trouble finding o rings and coolant.
Thermaltakes coolant says not to use on other cooling systems.
The only other one I see is Zalmans.
    NewEgg doesn't make it anymore.

    ok,

    1) I had a look at the conversion process to remove the LCS.
How many of you opted to remove the LCS and replace with heatsinks vs keeping it?

    2) Can I remove one of the processors and MOS will still run? Which one?

    @Bash64:
Viton o rings can be found on ebay. See here:
    http://www.ebay.it/itm/IMPERIAL-SIZE-VITON-RUBBER-O-RINGS-CROSS-SECTION-1-78MM-SIZES-BS004-BS033-/221138552287?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var&hash=item337ce285df&_uhb=1
This seller seems to have a very good set of those rubber o rings. According to what I've read a dual 2.7 G5 has a Viton with those specs:
Viton AS568313A Aerospace Standard ID Number: 027."
    Number: 027." Dimensions: ID = 1.313", OD = 1.438", thickness = 1/16"
The seller specifies dimensions in centimeters so I did a little conversion and:
    1.313" = 3.33502 cm
    1.438" = 3.65252 cm
So if you select the BS027 you will notice dimensions are in the range. Of course, you have to check your Viton o rings to be sure you are not buying something else (I'm not really sure o rings are all the same dimensions changing G5 model so better be careful and search about before!).
About Cooler MAster coolant liquid that kind of uv blue liquid is discontinued and out of stock (as you've seen). I don't think that another liquid couldn't be used provided that it is a non conductive liquid. So distilled water would be enough. If you want to take a look to Feser One that is described as a really good product:

I am waiting on a Powermac G5 2.5ghz DP system.
So my o-rings might be a different size.
I will have to wait and see.
I'd prefer to remove the LCS if others have done so and have had no issues.

The guy I bought it from has quite a few identical models for sale, 2.7GHz DP, 4GB RAM, 256MB 9650 Pro with dual DVI outputs. He's based in Spain though so import duty to the states might be high.

I think liquid cooling is much better than simple air cooling.
I already have liquid cooling kit lying around here for my hackinstosh.

Swapped over the LCS to passive cooling. Typing on it right now. It's runningat 81*C at the moment. I will keep an eye on it and see where it peaks out.

The LCS had no visible signs of leakage until I removed the CPU cards from the LCS. Sure enough, there was leakage around the screws at the thermal plates. There was very minimal area that was on one CPU card, the other was clean. I guess I got lucky.

Passive and at 81c, that sounds good for these machines.
Well, I will try to get some heatsinks.
I have the 2.5ghz DP system.
Do I need a specific heatsink? From the 2ghz model?

I used the heat sinks from a 2.0Ghz, PCI-X machine. They don't look any different from the 2.0Ghz, PCI machine I have.

The only diiference between the coolers located on the CPU boards themselves is the passive cooler on the 2.5 boards are taller than those on the 2.0 boards. They still work, just a little taller.

I don't believe, that you are passively cooling a G5 processor.
    It will blow the cpu.

Doffo has been running a passive cooled machine for a little while now and it seems to be running OK, It may eventually blow up the CPU, but hasn't yet....what's not to believe? Do I need to take pictures?

Yes, running the heatsinks, but obviously the fans are still intact. 8-)

I did not like the fact the fans spooling up as soon as it gets passed 87C, but they do spin back down shortly after it brings the temp down to 84c. Even with a 120mm connected to the 12v molex blowing air across the heatsinks, it kept it under 85C the whole time.

If they blow up, let them. Have a spare 2.7 g5 tower along with some xserve 2.3ghz cpus I have to try outl. My G5 tower is still running. After I replace all 4 fans so they are always on, I hope to see temps drop much lower. I will report back once everything comes in. ;-)
