I currently have 4 G5 computers in my possession:
1 - 2.0 GHz - PCI bus
2 - 2.0 Ghz - PCI-X bus, of those...one doesn't work.
1 - 2.5 GHz - PCI bus - Dreaded liquid cooled machine.

Has anyone removed the LCS from either the 2.5 or 2.7 Ghz machines and replaced it with the Passive (Fan) cooling system from a 2.0 machine.

If so, is it a pretty easy swap? I want to run the OS on this machine, but I really don't want to have to go through the headache of the LCS system.

I think it could be done with a 2.5 machine with no real detriment to keeping to processors cooled. Not too sure about the 2.7 machines.

I am concerned about possible issues. I know there was a reason why Apple designed that machine with that type of cooling system...high heat. The G5 is an incredibly hot CPU, hence why there never was a Powerbook G5.

Will somebody who has done this and has been running with the passive cooling on these machine report in and tell us how it's doing after the conversion.

I am the one who wrote out that guide, but I suppose my G5 hasnt blown up yet. compared to my LCS panasonic 2.7ghz, the LCS kept around 84c-86c the entire time, whereas my passive kept from 85c-88c. Once the fans kick on the 2.7ghz passive, it brings it back down to 84c before they spin back down.

I just plan on running it till it burns down. Have 3 more G5s to use if it happens.

Actually, the G5 cpu doesn't draw nearly as much power as virtually ALL the high end AMD cpus I've had over the last several years (125 watts for a cpu?).
You just have to throw more air at the faster cpus (and instal really big copper heatsinks).

I believe the thermals got better with the 2004 PowerMacs because they shrunk the die from 130nm to 90nm. I'd like to try this heat sink swap with a Quad, but it'll probably require a more efficient heat sink and lots of constant air flow.

I am in the process of removing all 4 of the 92mm fans and replacing them with new ones going straight to the molex power connector. This way the setup runs cooler and so the passive setup doesn't stay too hot and wait for the fans to spin up. Sure there may be some fan noise but I am used to it.

I have a 2.5ghz g5 on the way. I think it is LCS.
What do I check for to find leaks?

I just bought a 2.7 GHz PowerMac 7,3 that is fan-cooled.

Should arrive next week. Will open her up and give it a good look and post some photos if people want?

I have the dreaded 2.5ghz DP LCS on the way.
The article on how to clean it up is rather overbearing.
If someone has a simpler cleanup method I'd appreciate it.

OK, when I setup a G5, I'm ditching the liquid cooling.

Should have everything by saturday I am hoping... It might be a better bet to replace all 4 fans with ones that constantly move air much more quicker and quietly. I tried converting the fans so that they are on at 12v full bore, and they are LOUD! I tried them at 5v, and it barely moves any air. I will report back with temps once the fans come in. Even with a 120mm for the intake side half-assed leaning against the passive coolers on the 2.7ghz, it kept a constant 85.2c the entire time even under load. So all new fans should do the trick.

Is this 82 degrees Celsius normal?
Most PCs stay between 45 and 55.

Thermaltakes coolant says not to use on other cooling systems.
The only other one I see is Zalmans.

1) I had a look at the conversion process to remove the LCS.
How many of you opted to remove the LCS and replace with heatsinks vs keeping it?

2) Can I remove one of the processors and MOS will still run? Which one?

This seller seems to have a very good set of those rubber o rings. According to what I've read a dual 2.7 G5 has a Viton with those specs:
Viton AS568313A Aerospace Standard ID Number: 027."
Number: 027." Dimensions: ID = 1.313", OD = 1.438", thickness = 1/16"
The seller specifies dimensions in centimeters so I did a little conversion and:
1.313" = 3.33502 cm
1.438" = 3.65252 cm
So if you select the BS027 you will notice dimensions are in the range. Of course, you have to check your Viton o rings to be sure you are not buying something else (I'm not really sure o rings are all the same dimensions changing G5 model so better be careful and search about before!).
About Cooler MAster coolant liquid that kind of uv blue liquid is discontinued and out of stock (as you've seen). I don't think that another liquid couldn't be used provided that it is a non conductive liquid. So distilled water would be enough. So my o-rings might be a different size.
I will have to wait and see.
