There is a small mistake if you use a text-key: you will need quotion marks for the key!
eg:

I don't know why, but my Netgear W511T needs as first line in wireless.prefs following line:
update_config=1
network={
ssid="mynet2"
key_mgmt=NONE
wep_key0="blablabla123"
wep_tx_keyidx=0
}Without that line, Atheros-Chip won't go online........

Just ordered the TP-Link TL-WN610G PCMCIA card for my PowerBook as they are very cheap (~10€ new) and the chipset is AR2414: listed as supported by the ath5k driver.
