Its been a while (too long) since I've used MorphOS. Shouldnt have sold my system. I stumbled across a PowerMac G4, dual processors, 1GB ram and 40gb hd desktop. Surely this will work under MorphOS?

Any G4 Powermac should work. Make sure you have a Radeon gfx card and that the Mac is really a G4 Powermac and not some G3 Powermac with G4 processor card.
For details about all supported hardware refer to http://www.morphos.de/hardware

Nice to see you coming back to active use - enjoy!

Just asked the seller..hopefully it meets the requirements. Looking forward to it! :-)

EDIT: Does MorphOS make use of both processors in this system? I also found another tower, except it has a NVidia card (quicksilver tower)..is it as easy as buying a Radeon and swapping it out?

    No.

Yes, provided you buy a Mac edition Radeon with PPC-compatible ROM or otherwise are prepared to flash a compatible ROM to it (and maybe tape some pins).

2x1GHz suggests either a QuickSilver_2002,MDD or FW800 model, all supported.

MDD/FW800 have somewhat better RAM and slighly higher FSB so they should be faster than an older QS with the same CPU.

    MorphOS uses only 1 CPU

You have to have either a genuine Mac Radeon or a PC one flashed&modified for use in a Mac (can be tricky).

Depending on price, budget and patience you might also look out for an G5 (with AGP-GFX), even the slowest easily outperform those G4s (and you get a free heater with it !!! ).

As I wrote, you'll need patience for that one.....

There was a bounty to bigfoot for the G5 port and it's not really a secret that it allready gone into betatesting.

Just have no idea when it will be released .....

damn. Ok, then I will wait. I can get a G5 for about $100-$125. I'd love to run MorphOS on it.

    Hell...I'll BUY the BETA...

So..any devs willing to make it happen, LMK, I'll pay the full price for the beta version and I'll help you test. :-)

well..from what I read, it runs pretty good already...aaaannnnnndddd another beta tester is always good :-)

They could even charge an extra $50 to be a part of the "MorphOS BETA Program". I'd be in.

Quit playin around MorphOS DEV! Make it happen! :-) LOL

another question..if I HAVE to wait for G5 support...

How well does MorphOS run on that 450mhz tower?

    Its this one specifically:
    http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/sys/3754211274.html

Should I find a "better G4" than this one?

The 450MHz won't be that much of a problem (somewhere between a Peg2 G3 and G4 I would assume), but you will probraly only find an ATI Rage in there.
This will work, but only without 3D and enhanced display (and even 2D stuff won't be as fast with a Radeon).

Now at that price..... the last G4 I bought was a whooping 40Euro for a 800MHz QuickSilver with a 32MB Radeon7500 (+ bits&pieces), much better value and I'd guess that prices in the US would be even lower.

So unless you can arrange local pickup/free shipping for under 50$ I would pass it ....

Ok. I'll pass on that system. I did find a QS G4 for $100. I'm finding out the details of it so I may just get that one.

EDIT: Another question.. in dual proc systems...so it just uses 1 processor and the other just stays idle all the time?

I have too much G4 hardware at the moment lol. Also four G5 towers, two being 2.7ghz models and two of the 2.0 models. For the G4 tower I registered morphos with I got a single 1.25ghz cpu module card, overclocked it to 1.5ghz, and used the copper heatsink. Runs MUCH cooler and great. :) 8-)

Your G4 PowerMac is set up the same as mine. I think it is the best combination of speed, expandability, and power usage for running MorphOS3.1.

I thought about overclocking to 1.67GHz, but the small performance gain over the 1.5GHz speed does not seem to be worth the extra effort, extra heat and extra potential for damaging the G4 CPU.

I give away old hardware as I move up.
    Can't wait for G5 support.

BTW - Unless you really need the speed, I'd stick with a @.0 GHz model (no liquid cool).

And I can help with the R300 card.
I've found that most of the Radeon 9800XT cards will accept a full modified 128k rom.
And no pin disabling to complicate things.

Remember, if you find cheap Power macs, it doesn't hurt to buy them and install MorphOS.
    Then give it away.

Once someone tries MorphOS, they are invariably hooked.

The more users, the larger the market for software.
And some may go on the develop code.

Edit - Man, just fired up the second MDD I bought.
Its one of the earlier models and man is it loud.
i never understood what the complaint was about because my first MDD was one of the later models and produced no more noise then my older Quicksilver.
This thing sounds like a jet readying for take off.
It does have an OSX installed in a seperate small partition though.
So the user will have OSX and MorphOS on the hard drive.

BTW - not to gloat, but here is the listing I bought it at.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Power-Mac-G4-Desktop-AS-IS-Z-1-POWERS-ON-STICKS-AT-STARTUP-/400465563636?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&nma=true&si=1hdIrfxrzguDhm98wUJLby7%252FNck%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Still have to add an extra 512MB of memory, the Soundblaser Live, and an NEC USB 2.o card (I've got the first two).

And I'm swapping in a dual 1.33GHz Xserve processor.

    Hey David!
Where's my instructions for the 1.25 GHz card mod?

I have taped the pins to a gfx card on my Powermac. I wonder if this could be dangerous in any way?

The gfx card works fine after the little mod.

Sure I know, I am asking if taping the pins can be dangerous in anyway... I do not know a lot of heat down there and those little tape pieces on the gfx card... I do not know, just asking!
