Drivelamps.sbar comes with MorphOS and can visualize (on my Mac mini) accesses for ide.device, idemacio.device and usbscsi.device.

Ah right, i was wondering if there was a hardware mod to make the led on the lid catch become a hdd led.

As the internal harddrive is IDE, you for sure could apply an LED or replace the power LED by a dual LED and simply adding a transistor and a resistor to fire it up on ide transfers, but I guess that will be overkill and more or less result in a damaged powerbook for the most people around.

never thought of replacing it with a dual led, will have to see if i can find one the right colour and a red/blue as the second, i remember adding the led mod back in the day to the xbox for the mod chips to one of the pins with a resistor.

Thanks will look into something and possibly post some pics.

i have dug out a spare from a knackered powerbook but the little board says 94v on it, surly the led cant be 94v or is this correct?
might have to lift the lid on my pb and use a volt meter to check

The led is software controlled so in theory we could make it blink on hdd activity. There will probably be some userland interface to control the led state at some point, so some brave soul might adjust it to blink on hdd activity.

i am going to attempt to make it flash as the hard drive is accessed via the hardware side, as if a program loads and takes over the screen i can see if it accessing the drive or just crashed.

Well sight unseen, it is highly unlikely to be anything other than a standard LED with about 1.5V drop so just connect it to the correct IDE pin with a resistor to limit the current.
You may need to use a pass transistor dependent on the LED but it`s still very simple.
Good idea and good luck - I may duplicate your hack.

As a test i used a 3mm round led and shaved it to fit in the slot made the green part connect to the original connector and put the red leg to pin 39 of the ide connector and it works well all i need to do now is get an smd tri colour led to fit the board and fix the ide wire to it.

If there place for 3x3 mm² smd led I may point you to the Nichia NSSM065T - a high quality RGB SMD LED.
Draws up to 50 mV (red) or 35mV(green/blue) and costs about 1-2 EUR in single qantity.
