    Hola!

Recently I have make a quick upgrade to morphos 3.1 from 2.7 on my Pegasos 1 April2. I was about to burn a CDDA with make cd, when I got an error "Source drive, CDR_SCSI3_ATAPI: C into read failed Cmd Mode Sense_6=> illegal request: illegal field in command description."

In a second time I noticed I coudn't play wav files from CDDA!

Having one dvd reader and a dvd writer, I tried maybe all combinations of channels, master, slave, case sensitive and sometime I got that "Audio CD has a read/write error" or you can see play buttons on the menu bar appear and disappear in a flash with a reader that doesn't read nothing.

Thinking about an audio chip problem, I copied a wav file from CDDA to HD - 1MB/s - and played it with successful. Okdokey

Then I made the same test launching the MorphOS 2.7 Installation CD and getting the same error above.

Anyway, I was sure, time ago I could play and launching The Morphos 2.2 Installation CD, finally I realised that. So why?

Why does Morphos 2.2 play CDDAs and 2.7-3.1 versions fail?

Quite possible that the drive is having some issues.

    Thanks

but with "drive" do you mean the DVD ROM or the drive software?

The hardware. You can verify that with Jalapeno instead of MakeCD too..

I installed a new Pioneer DVD-RW and playing a wav file from a CDDA I got same "Audio CD has a read/write error" on Morphos 3.1

I'm going to test Jalapeno... nice program
    - Burnt fine a couple of audio CDs with my two DVD-RW
    - Tested my DVD reader on a Xubuntu system with Banshee Player
    - Tested my Pegasos 1 power supply with a specific tester
All my DVD drivers look like good as well as my power supply

Is it necessary to use the analogic cable to play from a CD-Rom? Do I have to plug into the CD or AUX motherboard port?

PS On the Ambient Bar there's a CPU statistic that I'd like to remove, can you help me, pls? Maybe I don't remeber, maybe I'm blind!

I started this topic cause I'd have liked to write CD with Make CD which coudn't cause "Source drive, CDR_SCSI3_ATAPI: C into read failed Cmd Mode Sense_6=> illegal request: illegal field in command description."
Then I understood an incompatibility with the Artec DHS-G40 DVD ROM. I can't use that one as a reader with both Make CD and Jalapeno, but avoiding that same reader, now I'm able to write CD with both these software.
Anyway, Artec DVD ROM, and the other 2 DVD RW drivers (a Samsung SH-W162 and a Pioneer) work apparently fine with Morphos. I can play audio CD using Mplayer or Make CD, BUT when I try to play music just using Morphos I can't and sometime I got the same CDs having a Read/Write error. Why? Is it a bug?

I'm going to try a last test...

You may use analoque sound from CD-Drive - there is a connector on the motherboard. Some players only sends commands to the CD-drive und do not transfer digital sound data over IDE..... In some cases it is also "nice to have" - specially at games which comes with background sound on CD....

To remoove toolbar add-ons click with right mouse button to the right upper corner of screen - then you get the menu for Ambient-modules prefs....

To use CD over analog AND digital connection test this player:

    http://aminet.net/disk/cdrom/MOS_CDPlayer.lha

In its settings you can choose between digital streaming or analog playing. If there are r/w errors you may have a problem with your drive or ide-bus (maybe wrong IDE-Cable?)......

    Thank you

Changed pata cables but nothing has changed and CD Player "coudn't not access any CD-ROM" when MPlayer can...

Maybe my Pegasos has an HW problem but yestarday I tried to play CDs from a Mac Mini I have in another place and I got the same problem. Maybe also my Mac Mini is faulty but why I could play the same CDs easly with Tiger?

In my opinion the problem is software. What is the program that Morphos launch to play CDs?

Well, if we're talking about audio playback using Reggae (Ambient) using the wav track emulation for CDDA discs, that is a software issue that we sadly forgot to address.

Finally, it means my Pegasos hardware isn't faulty and that sounds good.
And now I know how to write CDs with Make CD...
    thanks

    mmmmh.

...seems that i have a similar problem. cd-rom-drive works fine playing audio-cds with mac-os-x10.1 on my old powermac g4 (2x450mhz, 2001, 1,2gb-ram, soundblaster live! -not supportet-).

with morphos 3.1 i got problems:
if i put an original audio-cd in the puter, it´s recognised with an icon on the ambient screen. i can open the window, view all files, and the tracks are shown with standard system-icon. but when i doubleclick a track, the message "cd has a read-/write-error" appears. so i couldn´t play audio-cds with multiview, jukebox or the ambient menue "play".

surprisingly i can rip the audio-cd with jalapeno (which folder is the temporary file saved, before burning???), but very slow. maybe that´s the 400mhz-processor.

so is a solution in sight for this problem, playing audio-cds "native" using ambient?

    thanx a lot

Playback of CDDA-wav-emulated files using Reggae is broken currently - this is a known issue. Hopefully krashan will have a workaround for this :)

As for ripping with Jalapeno - do consider using Flacapella. Jalapeno isn't really suitable for CDDA ripping because it will use drive's error correction. Flacapella uses libparanoia instead which will give you an accurate rip even with CDs in bad conditions or some odd "copy control" schemes.

Hopefully krashan will have a workaround for this :)

Workaround has been implemented just today. Two Reggae classes have been modified. It is not decided yet if the fix will wait for MorphOS 3.2 or Reggae gets some update earlier.

    So will there an update?
    Thanks!

but maybe it's useful if I tell you my last test. Payback runs fine but can't play the music CD. Ide.device's been correctly configured, I can see CD-ROM reading but no sound in output. Then what Shogo gets is "Could not initialize sound. Please make sure you sound card is configured correctly.", so no sound and I can't configure mouse and keyboard.
