Flaky Mac Mini CD Drive - I think ...

    Hello,

My first Mac Mini blew up in less than six months. It's sitting in pieces in a box. Never got it repaired.

I purchased another one last week. I'm trying to install Morphos 2.7 on it, but it does not boot up to the ISO on cd when I hold the C key down. It boots to OS X. The alt key doesn't show a Morphos option.

When the machine finally boots into Mac OS, an error pops up that it doesn't recognize the CD: "Disk Insertion - The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer".

I even tried the Morphos 2.4 ISO I made for my previous Mac Mini. (Which worked flawlessly when I first installed Morphos on that other machine). But even that ISO doesn't work on this Mini. Same error. Yet, the machine reads music CDs just fine and I even re-installed Mac OS X from scratch with no issues. I thought at first perhaps I didn't write the ISO to disk properly.

So yes it's probably something really stupid on my part. Or maybe the cd drive? What am I missing?

    Here's the hardware profile.

    Machine name: Mac Mini
    Machine Model: PowerMac10,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.2)
    Number of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.42 Ghz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 1 GB
    Bus speed: 167 Mhz
    Boot Rom Version: 4.8.9f1

I was thinking of maybe swapping the CD drive from my other Mac Mini. I was also wondering if I could boot Morphos from an external USB drive?

I appreciate any insight or suggestions.

My Morphos image disk is ok. I connected an external cd/dvd drive and it comes up on the Mac Mini's desktop but fails when I load it through the mac's internal cd/dvd drive.

Success! That's all it was. I mustered a bit of courage an a can of Duster and swapped the CD/DVD drive. That's all it was. Bad drive. Morphos 2.7 is currently installing. YAY!

Glad you got it figured out and fixed. I also have a MacMini that I need to replace the DVD drive with a different one. It works most of the time, but there are times when it does not work reliably, so I am pretty sure that it is just a flaky DVD drive. I have resisted replacing it so far, as I want to buy some more RAM for it and swap both at the same time. 512mb RAM is okay for almost everything, but 1gb would be better.
