Can we talk about the PS3 again, now?

I guess Jim referred to use of the Cell PPE only, i.e. without using the SPEs. AFAIK the PS3 can't play 1080p video without using the SPEs.

Could be wrong, but I'd assume there's quite a bit of GPU acceleration going on aswell.
Remember that a mere single core Intel Atom CPUs with nvidia ion can also easily play 1080p video, if the video codec happens to be one there's enough GPU acceleration for.

I was absolutely only refering to the power of the PPE. I'm not sure how SPes would be programmed under Linux and I don't expect either Linux or AROS to initially benefit from them.
Andreas provided the benchmark that pretty much makes this case only a few posts ago

Specific functions in custome processors can easily and cheaply smoke powerful general use CPUs. For example, there are handheld devices (cameras, phones) that not only decode, but also ENCODE some forms of high definition video... ON BATTERIES!

It's not magic, it's engineering (as some shampoo TV ad says) :-D

Linux on PS3 exists since the release of the PS3 itself and has made use of the SPEs since the beginning. See for example the spu-medialib I linked to previously.

Yes, that was a poorly thought out statement. Linux should make SPE use almost transparent. I couldn't find any references on how Linux handle such an odd asymetrical combination (since coprocessora are more commonly implemented on a 1 to 1 ratio with a main processor)..

I'll have to spend a little time looking into this. Thanks.

Wow! That's exactly the info required.

    Thank you Andreas.

I knew IBM had a software library for the Cell, but II wasn't aware of how well the SPEs were supported under Linux.

BTW - I do have to again appologize for suggesting this processor as a candidate for MorphOS. As I get a better appreciation for its unique design, I realize just how different it is (then a standard PPC).
