Is it possible to upgrade from the standard CD writer of the G4 Power Mac (Digital Audio model) to a standard IDE DVD-RW Dual layer drive ?

I heard that the drive should have an Apple firmware or else it won't work.

Can a normal drive be flashed with the right firmware?

I've replaced the old dvd-rom (reader) of my MDD with a brand new LG DVD-RW without trouble. I can't tell for any other MAC models though.

    Yo

I replaced the old dvd-ram drive on my powermac 3.1
    with a IDE DVD-burner (I f I remember righ,it's a LG-drive)

Works good, no problem too boot or read CD/DVD on it.
I have tested both OSX 10.4 and morphos 2.6

I have yet tested burning. So not sure about that.

i had several powermacs in the past and never had any issue changing the cd drive for any ide cd or dvd writers. I'm sure MorphOS handles it perfectly, and Frying Pan should work with most burners.
