    As reported in pdf manual, to upgrade the firmware you should boot in Mac OS 9 and then download the firmware from there.
    But I found those:

    Manually Update
    Update OSX Firmware

    I hope they could be useful... :-)

    Hi Dougal,

    I see your MorphOS on Mac saga continues... :-(

    This sounds very much like no bootable media has been found.
    This could be because the Mac is not set up to boot from the optical drive (although I assumed that OFW searched all devices), or a problem with the media from which you are trying to boot.

    If you have burned the Mac OS9 DVD yourself than perhaps you should check that (is is bootable? Did you successfully burn the .dmg image to disk (rather than as a file)?)
    This is easy to check: on the same computer with the same configuration, does the MorphOS cd boot? If no, then the optical drive is not being searched for bootable media. If yes, then at least you have isolated the problem: the OS9 disk.

    Hope you manage to get the card bootrom upgraded without losing all your hair.

    Regards

    @Dougal:

    I had a similar issue, for me it was "just" that my OS9.2.2 CD wasn't compatible. I got another one, and this one worked for me, i've successfully updated the bootrom of my Gigabit.

    I tried 3 different CDs. 2 gave the floppy disk with question mark and one gave some other icon. The Mac boots CDs fine because I installed tiger with no problems and even morphos. I need help here. Maybe an alternative to os 9

    Anyone have a link to an OS9 torrent or something that will work? Can I try Os8? Am I burning it wrong?

    Do you need to update your old Open Firmware Apple ? if yes, you need to boot with a cdrom OS9.x or use an hd with OS9.x.

    then you need to patch the Open Firmware with the package of Sonnet (you can do it in OSX or OS9) : packages are in Sonnet download web site.

    then you can insert, connect the Sonnet CPU card.

    According to the Sonnet Encore manual, i need 4.2.8 or something like that, but mine is 4.1.8 (i think).

    My point is i cannot install OS 9 because its giving me a disk with a question mark icon when i try and boot from the os9 cd

    @Divinity:

    There's no patch from Sonnet, all you need is the latest version of the OpenFirmware, downloadable from the Apple site. And this update needs OS9.x installed on a hd or compactflash, booting from install cd won't be enough.

    According to the Sonnet Encore manual it says that the firmware needs to be patched using the utility downloadable from their website.

    I now have the latest 4.2.8 firmware installed. Had to do that from OS9.

    Next step i guess is the Sonnet package, No?

    I suppose you just have to do what Sonnet says in it's manual ...

    @Dougal:

    hmm, my (distant, dark) memories tell me that something went wrong with this Firmware Patcher, I tried it out because I had massive problems in OSX with a reflashed Radeon 8500, but this problems were due to a not 100% compatible gfxcard bios. IIRC on my Gigabit I only updated the Open Firmware from 3.4.8f1 (or so) to 4.2.8 (latest), and with an original Mac Radeon went fine. You've got single core 1 GHz 7455 with 2MB L3 Cache (SG4-1000-2M)?

    So, does the Sonnett patch have to be installed or will a recent firmware update work?
    This thread has me a little confused and worried.
    I just placed an offer on a Sonnett 1.8 Ghz upgrade (which was accepted) and now I'm a little worried about how to proceed (once I receive the CPU card)..
    You see, I don't have either OS9 or OSX installed on my Quicksilver. I used to have an OSX partition, but once I ran MorphOS 2.6 on my computer I decided to get rid of it (because in comparison OSX is slow and painful to use - why bother).
    So, either I've got to re-install Mac OS or hope the patch is unnecessary with later firmware revisions.

    Any advice guys?

    Well, try it. You're not risking more than an error message, because the update will only install if it's compatible. Maybe the faster cpu cards really need this update.

    That's pretty much what I planned to do. At best, it works w/o this firmware patch. At worst, it doesn't post at all.
    If I can avoid re-installing Mac OS, I'll be happy. But should it be required, well it's just another tedious bit of hacking I'll have to do.
