Depends on what "good priced" means in particular ;-) OWC has some new CPU upgrades to offer:

    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=149&type=Processor

There you can get 1.2 GHz (with L3 cache) for 199 USD. Or you can have 1.6 GHz (without L3 cache) for 158 USD instead.

Would the 1.6gz without L3 cache make my Morphos E-UAE work at full speed? Will i see a big difference from the current 466mhz it has?

    Yes.

As usual: 1600/466-1=243% speed gain in CPU bound tasks ;-)

I have E-uae running with 800Mhz ... can't say i see much difference with the original. So an 1600Mhz will do for sure I think.

I would say that the Sonnet is the best bet as those are known to work with MorphOS. I have the 1.8Ghz version myself.

What about those that i see on ebay? Second hand CPU's pulled from working Power Macs ? Or would i need additional hardware or have problems upgrading?

If your Powermac is the "Digital Audio" model then i think it's possible Quicksilver modules may work. However many Quicksilver cpu modules have 7450/1 cpus which currently aren't supported properly in MorphOS 2.6.

    This maybe of use

Really? Has there been any public statement by some MorphOS Team member to that effect?

There's been quite a lot of talk on IRC on the matter. If memory serves me both Pega-1/cyfm and bigfoot have confirmed the problem. I've also tried it myself on an old Quicksilver with 7450 and it failed to boot. However it seems that you can be lucky if you use certain gfx cards . Pega-1 did explain why this is but sorry i can't remember the details clearly enough :)

Hmmm, I wonder is this is why I so far haven't been able to get my 800mhz 2002 Quicksilver to boot MorphOS?. I get an error screen on the Quark/Firmware and it just stops. That was with a Radeon 7000 PCI. I got a Radeon 9000 AGP last night. I'm going to try it with that tonight when I get home.

I just bought me a Quiksilver 1Ghz dualcpu Powermac 3.5 to upgrade my 800Mhz Quiksilver. If the 1Ghz works well, I sell the 800Mhz ... so if anyone is interested. It works well with MorpOS.

It will work in a sawtooth or as such but you will have to change the multiplier to achieve 800Mhz. http://forums.mactalk.com.au/10/69707-powermac-g4-agp-sawtooth.html

If it already stops at the Firmware ... can it be MorphOS doing that ?

Memory serves you well, I remember the same. As far as I can tell (but I wasn't following with much attention as I am not a PowerMac owner, nor I plan to buy one in the near future) it seems that those CPUs work only in conjunction with a Rage 128(Pro) because they currently fail under MorphOS to address any GFX mem above 16MB. Maybe pega-1 will confirm, or just clarify if I am wrong. As far as I know, the team is trying to address these issues and a minor update (read: not labelled 2.7) might be out as soon as these and other minor hiccups gets resolved. But don't take my word for it and wait for some more official confirmation. ;-)

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

That's what I was wondering. It boots fine to MacOSX but when I try to boot off the MorphOS CD it just stops at the Quark/Firmware screen with an error message.

I tried three different CD's burned at different rates. and checked that the CD Drive and harddrive were set to master/slave properly. Still no luck.

The offer on the 800 Mhz processor is a good upgrade. Remember, when using a Quicksilver processor in a Digital Audio you have to supply/jumper to the the bottom right screw/mount (I think 12v ).
Right now, if you hunt for them new CPU cards out of Tiawan that run 733 processors at 933Mhz (no L3 cache, but stable and cool). I bought one in the Spring for $10 or $15 on Ebay.

I would get a MDD instead of trying to upgrade the older hardware. The MDD noise/heat output is significantly less noisy than the 3,1 Powermac with a 1.8Ghz card I have here. It also has a faster memory system and more/faster IDE ports.
I definitely prefer the 1.42Ghz system over the 1.8 one.

You have a point there... If Dougal didn't already buy a license for his old powermac, he could probably find a good MDD costing less then a 1.6GHz upgrade.

So what happens if the CPU dies or the computer dies or whatever?

    The CPU? Just replace it.
    Now if the board fails?
Heck of a question. I've got a back up motherboard lying around, but something tells me I'd have to plead to be able to switch to it.
