How do I type the hash key on my UK keyboard?

I have a British Kensington keyboard. The hash key is right to the right shift, but when I press it I get a vertical line instead :(

Any idea where did the hash key go?

Have you got the correct keymap set? What happens when you press shift and 3? ? ? (which should be the UKP symbol)

Yes I selected UK keyboard over course.
