MANY Sonnet Encore MDX G4 Duet @1800 have this problem : It's a problem of temperature ... You can enable NAP mode CPU in OSX to solve your problem.
In MorphOS you have not this problem, because you use only a CPU, so you don't have the problem of temperature.
As you, I have 256kb L2 in my second PowerMac G4 with Sonnet Encore ST single G4@1600
