I did not see information on the G4 Processor upgrade cards compatibility in the release notes. Should we assume 7447 based cards work and 7448 do not ? Anyone had a chance to test any yet ?

Please post your PM model / Processor upgrade card model / Success or failure.

Also I have just read that the 7455 has L3 cache whereas the 7447 has not. This may mean you would better have a fast 7455 (1.5 Ghz max ?) instead of a slow 7447.

Good to see you around still! PM me! Productive thread guys.. a 1.8ghz morph box is quite impressive.

Yes, 745x is able to address L3 cache while 744x is not. That's been the whole purpose of marketing both the '4' and the '5' line in parallel. Accordingly, you can assume generally that cards with 745x have L3 cache while cards with 744x have not.

We don't support 3rd party CPU cards officially - simply because we didn't have any to test. We hope the community will tell us which cards work and which don't (preferably by creating a wiki page with such info).

I would love to see some benchmarks to compare different cpu. Maybe there are some websites that have them from within OSX ?

Some benchmarks including PowerMac G4 results in various configurations:

    this is an interesting part:

    LEVEL 3 CACHE BETTER?
Another often asked question is, "Should I get CPU upgrade with the fastest clock speed or go for a slower clock speed version with L3 cache?" The short answer: "It depends."

It depends on what applications you are running. In past testing, certain applications (such as Photoshop) thrived on L3 cache. A slower CPU with L3 cache (7455 or 7457) would often beat a faster CPU with only L2 cache (7447A) when running our test action sets. But this discussion has recently become academic since the upgrades with L3 cache are being phased out. In a very short time, they will no longer be available unless leftover in some resellers inventory.

Also, in our most recent tests, the fastest 7455 (1.42GHz with L3 cache) could not match the speed of the fastest 7447A (2.0GHz with L2 cache). That and the fact that 7447As generate less heat and use less power, we have to recomend the 7447A based upgrades like the one we tested in this article.

Then again, if you can get a good price on a G4/1.4GHz 7455 or 7457 based upgrade, it would give a G4/1.8GHz 7447A a close race on all our test apps and beat it running Photoshop.

I can confirm that my Sonnet Encore ST G4 1.8GHz works. System Monitor identifies it as a 7455 with 256KB L2 cache and no L3 cache but from all the specs i've read it should be a 7457 or 7447 with 512KB L2 cache and no L3 cache. Could be Sonnet's firmware patch doesn't identify it correctly i suppose.

My broken Sonnet Encore MDX G4 Duet 1.8Ghz is running well with 2.6.
In OSX it freezez after short time.
And MorphOS System Monitor is reporting the CPU and the L2 Cache wrong.
It reports 7455 with only 256KB Cache.

MANY Sonnet Encore MDX G4 Duet @1800 have this problem : It's a problem of temperature ... You can enable NAP mode CPU in OSX to solve your problem.
In MorphOS you have not this problem, because you use only a CPU, so you don't have the problem of temperature.

As you, I have 256kb L2 in my second PowerMac G4 with Sonnet Encore ST single G4@1600

Oh and my MDX freezes the system after 10-30 sec. i don't think that this is normal.

I had your problem, It's a temperature problem, and in my case It was solved with enabled NAP (with your same card Sonnet Encore MDX dual G4@1800)
You find NAP in CHUD package (I used version 4.6.2), in this picture you see it with a different CPU card (a Sonnet ST single G4) ...but It's the same.

    Salut,

I installed yesterday the CHUD package and his pref panel, but there no NAP. Maybe that won't work with Sonnet MDX. It's not a real problem because I don't use osX :-)

Other thing about the MDX. I have a slow ram speed in writing mode (about 320MB/sec), and writing is slower than reading. According to Fab, it's not normal. I tested with Memtest under Morphos and Geekbench under os X. The results are the same.
If someone could test his ramspeed with his MDX and post his result, that would be cool :-P

Just gave a quick test to a Giga Designs G-celerator Dual 7447 1.8Ghz Upgrade for pre-MDD Powermac models. All seemed fine except MorphOS thinks it's 467Mhz.
