Could some efika users confirm the issues i get with USB in MorphOS on Efika ? I reinstalled an efika from scratch using morphOS 2.5 and i still got the same issues i had with previous morphOS versions, usb devices dropping or freezing the system when starting to copy files, accessing mass storage devices etc... it happens almost all the time. It makes the system quite unusable. Is it a common issue or just my efka which is defficient ?

I have absolutely no problem with USB in MorphOS 2.5 on Efika.
I had issues with previous version but everything went fine with 2.3+.

I just have the (long standing) audio issue on the right channel.

Try to set max transfer of the usb device to the minimum. Perhaps it helps to reduce system freezing.

Do you use USB hub? If so, is it active? Does the problem with file copying still occur when copying from shell?

    @koszer

yes i use a usb hub, unpowered, but i have the same issues without it.
    I'll try from the shell.

Try also to perform the copies with DOpus4 to see if you can reproduce the freezes

I would bet it's a power issue then. What kind of PSU are you using with Efika? Could you try an active hub too?

I had some problems of dropping connection when I connected the USB key to an unpowered hub. I found that everything works fine and dandy if I connect the USB mass storage device directly to one of the USB ports in the Efika and just connect keyboard and mouse to the hub. I guess this is because the 5200 drives the USB ports with very low currents (after all it dissipates 1W total - driving not just a couple of USB ports, but the IDE as well, the PCI bus and including the consumption of a CPU...), so I guess that some devices might fail even when connected to the back port of Efika directly. In that case I would try a self-powered USB hub: if problems are gone, we have found the guilty one.

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

I can agree! Since I use self-powered USB-Hubs I've no problems..... in some cases the EFIKA-USB runs better than the PEGASOS-USB (TomTom Navi, some USB-HDs, etc...)

thanks guys, i'll try with an externally powered usb hub tomorrow and report here !

EDIT : it seems like one of my efika usb ports is dead, or almost. I plugged a powered hub to it and experienced the same issues, system freezing when accessing mass storage devices (even listing files caused freezing). Then i moved it to the other port and everything went fine, i could copy large files, and do other operations without any problem.

thanks to all for your help !

and yes this is VERY annoying, it prevents me from listening to any music through the efika. I don't remember this issue under debian, is the efika audio morphos driver so bad or is it a hardware issue ?

EDIT : actually my USB issue isn't solved, it's fine with an old 256mb usb stick but it keeps freezing with all my other sticks and external HDs when i list the content with ambient... powered hub doesn't change anything, at least not much...

For not more than the price of Efikia you can buy a silent upgrade MacMini.

You would much happier with this.

This is so very strange... What kind of PSU are you powering your Efika from? Does this "freezing" still occur when you list the content from shell?

    I have the same problems.

Some weeks ago I bought an Efika.
It has an internal IDE HDD.
    It runs Mos 2.5 registered.

Whenever I try to copy some files to USB massstorage devices, system freezes !

    I tried several confugurations
    result:

problem occurs when I use my MOS installation on HD, but also when I boot from MOS install-image.
    seems,
it doesn't matter, which USB port the devices are connected to.
it doesn't matter, if I connect directly or via an active USB hub.
it doesn't matter, which mass storge device is connected (tried two sticks and one HD).
it doesn't matter, if I copy via Desktop or Shell.

    other usb devices work fine.
also copying from IDE drive to Ram works without problems.

all tested mass storage devices work on Peg and Mini with MOS 2.5

    i use a pico PSU, 120w, should be enough : )

    @ pOS

glad to know i'm not the only one, i have serious doubts about the reliability of efika drivers, even if it's far beyond my skills to prove such a thing on a technical level, but i reinstalled a debian distro on the efika to make sure it wasn't a hardware issue, and i have no problems under linux with USB.

i had a macmini, a pegasos 2 and other pieces of morphos related hardware, and sold them for reasons that are still important to me.
Thank you for avoiding such comments/advices in the future, that won't solve anything for efika users having the same issues i experience.

    @Soundsquare:

Delete poseidon.prefs and reboot - this might help......
Sometime there is some "waste" in poseidon.prefs which prevents your systems to work propper....
I can only say that these problems does neither occur on my EFIKA nor on my friends one.....so I think this could be only a softwareproblem (assuming that there is no hardwaredefekt....)
You wrote the problems starts when you're booting from HD (both: normal installation or image - but both booted from HD?!?) Have you tried to boot completely from a stick? Maybe your HD is faulty....

uh-huh, and how about the external brick? Anything below 12V and 5A perhaps?

    as written on the brick : output : 12-14V 5.00-4,28A (TYP:12V 5.0A)

to answer someone else's suggestion, deleting poseidon.prefs as no effect, which seems pretty normal to me, especially after a clean install.

    SOLVED !

and this may help others with similar issues on Efika...
I solved it by changing the motherboard clock battery ! And now both usb ports work fine ! i copied 14gb from a 16gb usb stick to my internal HD (a 32gb compactflash card) and everything went fine.
    I'd love to understand though : )

for those who mentionned friends with similar issues, try with a new battery and it may work for them too.

thanks to all of you for your attention and help.
