MacMini Net Speeds

    Heh Guys
I have been playing around with my Mac Mini and MorphOS and enjoying it (remeber I am a Red), one things I seem to have problems with is download speeds. Browsing is nice and fast, email fine but downloads seem to crawl. I have ADSL1 which usually hits 100* kb/sec on my PC and SAMs but on my Mini I never seem to get above 30kb/s, mostly it is around 10kb/s.

I know there are a lot of reasons this can happen but is there any tweaks I can do to my network settings to improve this, it is a little agonising.

I am using an ADSL ethernet/wireless 4 port router. MOS is plugged directly into the router but I do have another sitch to serve all my equipment, all run fast off the switch.
    Any hints much appreciated.

Hi Acefnq, welcome to the darkside!

Are you using MorphOS2.4, or 2.5?

There were some improvements to the packet handling of the Sungem_eth.device between 2.4 and 2.5.
I now get speeds comparable to my oher computers (up to around 1MB/s (ie 8Mb/s)) when downloading from the net, (with ADSL connection speed of between 8Mb/s and 14Mb/s).

I've also set my IP address to static, but that shouldn't make any difference in your case (my Lan setup is a little quirky, DHCP server is the far side of a wireless bridge and is a bit 'iffy' sometimes).

Aside from that, I use default parameters.

I did have problems in the past due to a dodgy ethernet cable (kept dropping down to 10mb/s) which may be something to watch out for. Thankfully my switch displays different colour LEDs for the different connection speeds, so it was fairly obvious.

    Regards

    @Boot_WB

I have 2.5 installed and it hasn't helped.
Is this still being looked into, do you know?

Thabks for the welcome. I got over the BvR a long time ago but I am a little like a duck out of water playing with MOS. I just installed an Icon pack (brilliant) but maybe I should have held off and read the instructions, all is there I just have to re-find-:)

I am using 2.5, it may be the places I am going just now don't have big bandwidth and speeds but that doesn't seem too likely. Would setting DNS or anything advanced help, did you do that with your static IP?

    Cheers

On Network preferences (network interfaces tab) I have set static IP address, Mask, Gateway and (in the advanced settings) MTU to 1500 (standard for ethernet, but you could use some ping tool to detemine your max packet size if you're not sure).
On Network preferences (Host & DNS tab) I have set a static DNS entry for my modem/router/DHCP server(single IP address, eg 192.168.0.1). I have NOT put in any entry for the DNS servers of my ADSL provider, since this is handled by the modem/router.

If you'#e not sure if it is a particular website which is an issue, I'd recommend you try some website/file download which you know to have high bandwidth (eg a Linux distro ISO). Alternatively, some speedtest site such as http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ (although this requires the swfdec plugin for OWB, as it is flash-based).

This should allow you to identify if it is your connection, the website, or your Mac-mini Cx which is the bottleneck.

    Best of luck

Thanks for the advice. Will give it a go. It is really the last area of MOS that I need to tweak. I am slowly getting loads of things to work which makes it better and better.

    Thanks

Strange, because I don't really experience problems, slow downs, with internet connections, tried both, DHCP and fixed IP, except perhaps the high "Unknown" number in the Network Statistics window which goes up here to 250000 after about 15 hours...

Though I have problems with the MacMini and LAN connections, where I get drastic speed drops sometimes, not always. It drops so low that it's not possible to work with it in a LAN...
