I guess I have my 1st hardware failure (except one usb stick recently) in my now over 20 years of computer usage. The not yet two years old hdd in my pegasos1 seems to be broken. When I power on the maschine it works normal for a while, but after a few minutes I sometimes think I hear a rather silent "pling" and then MorphOS refuses any further harddisk access. Is that normal with a faulty hdd? I mean why no requester just telling me that volume xyz: has a read/write error and giving me the chance for a retry?
First I thought the ide may be broken, but removing the suspicious hdd an inserting another hdd works w/o lock ups. Any comment on this? I would like to somehow retrive data from the suspicious hdd (I mean I need to have the chance to carefully check if there is data on that drive not available on any backup).

Whenever you're sad just remember the world is 4.543 billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie.

Well, consumer hds usually try to recover errors and that can take ages. I had the same kind of effect lately with my macbook and when it ran into this condition it got unusable.

I had a similar issue with my Pegasos2.

The system halted. At first, I didn't understand it was a hard disk issue. The lock was sometimes one second long, sometimes about 30 seconds or more. And then, the system came back.

I've just swapped the hard disk and everything went fine again. I was able to backup all my data to the new hard disk without any problem.

Welcome to the club, I had mine (disk became a brick, unrepairable) after twenty years too, and wasn't ready for it: No backup.

But the system still works! Go try that with your regular Windows or Unix...
