    Acill probably wasn't referring to Moana as he spoke about G5 in particular whereas Moana is for G4 (Mac mini).

    Yes, indeed. They originally annnounced the core clock as 1.2 to 1.5 GHz but now it seems to be only 1.0 GHz in this chip. Nevertheless, nice to see that LSI is no longer the only company to use PPC47x technology in its chips.

    Is it still possible to get the PPC Axxia chips? Avago bought out LSI and then IIRC they sold the Axxia division to Intel.

    After all, the last generation of video game consoles all used PPC cpus, and now only one does (with two of the major players switching from IBM PPC cpus to X86 based systems).
    Soon now, that last holdout will shift away from PPCs (once the WiiU is replaced).

    So Axxia PPC cpus from Intel?
    Maybe the ARM variants, and for existing customers? Who knows?
    What will they promote and continue to develop?
    Bet it isn't PPC based.

    I think so, but you may have to be an existing Axxia customer from LSI or Avago times for Intel to meet your purchase request.
    This Intel PCN from February 2015 has some information on pages 3 to 6 on how Intel intends to handle the Axxia business. Pages 7 and 8 contain a list of Avago product codes and the respective new Intel product codes, among them also PPC-based Axxia chips:

    I don't expect Intel to develop PPC any further but I don't think consoles would have any thing to do with it. The shift in architecture hasn't changed anything for Intel and unless they seriously up their GPU game AMD will have the console vendor market sewn up for the foreseeable future.

    The Intel PCNs I mentioned also list chips from the ARM-based Axxia AXM5500 series. What seems missing is the AXE4500 series, which was the last ARM-based Axxia series developed by LSI.

    Something tells me that is not a quantity they are going to want to talk about. ;)

    Something tells me as the years go by that I am really going to miss Freescale.

    One? That's still got me grinning.

    Personally, if these are some of our choices, Chinese hardware that may never see the light of day or Intel owned PPC designs, we may have a problem.

    Power8/9 seems to have a future, but the PowerPC processor seems to be on life support.

    No stock, unfortunately.

    Of course, one could as well request a quote directly from Intel for thousands of chips. Their answer (if they give one) should at least give away whether or not they sell those chips to new customers.


    Well, they are listed as backordered, maybe they are available.
    Or if Intel is sitting on a stockpile of them, maybe they might be willing to supply them.
