Has this "Linky" already been discussed here, and/or on Power Developer, with regard toward future hardware designs for MorphOS?

Can anyone that knows more translate from the Techno-Speak on that linked site to layman beginning MorphOS user understandable language (preferably in English) and explain what, if anything this might mean for future PPC products and designs, which may, or may not include future designs that could be used for MorphOS4.x.

    Thanks,

Edit: I meant to link to the MPC8572E chip video about content processing of datastreams without interruption during downloading of additional data. A Youtube video is on the page I linked to.

    1. I think it's a cool chip, but it's dual core which makes it less appealing in a MorphOS context (you pay 100% of the cost while MorphOS only can use 50% of the power). It's also e500 cores (what used to be "G3"), i.e. it has no Altivec. If you want e500 there are a few other SoC's in the PowerQuick line of products that would perhaps be more suitable in a MorphOS context. A more interesting chip however (in a desktop context) is the 8640(D) (preferably the single core version, i.e. the one without the "D" extension) or the 8610. They are also SoC's, but they are built on the e600 core (they have Altivec). The 8640 has better connectivity options and would fit nicely in a "Pegasos 3" desktop motherboard with PCI-Express graphics. The 8610 is possibly the best performing 32-bit PPC implementation that was built by Freescale, also it has a built in display controller that would make sense in a netbook or similar (but you could still build a motherboard with a PCI-Express graphics slot of course).

    2. But for any of these chips *truly* becoming interesting in a MorphOS context it would require that someone actually builds suitable motherboards using them. I don't see this happening. Genesi worked on both a 8641D and 8610 design, but has put those on the shelve in favor of their ARM effort around the i.MX515 SoC. Are there anyone else?

    3. In short term we have the Mac Mini version of MorphOS to look forward to. Maybe a powerbook release will follow? But then what? There is no interesting roadmap for the PPC platform anymore. What will follow the 8610, that will be more powerful and have even more features? The answer is probably "nothing". The e700 is nowhere to be seen (probably shelved), and since Apple went x86, Freescale's PPC strategy is all about network and automotive controllers. I think that MorphOS at some point down the road will have to jump to either ARM or x86. Or both.
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

No, and for a reason: The e500v2 core of the MPC8572E is not suited for MorphOS. More here.

    Nothing, I fear.

    > it's dual core which makes it less appealing in a MorphOS context

Its FPU implementation makes it even "more less" appealing in a MorphOS context.

    > e500 cores (what used to be "G3")

No, e500 is neither derivative nor descendant of MPC7xx.

    > If you want e500 there are a few other SoC's in the PowerQuick line

Unfortunately, there is not one single e500 based PowerQUICC (III) SoC that is suitable in a MorphOS context (see above). The first e500 based SoC that would be suitable will be the upcoming QorIQ P4 sub-family with its e500mc core (and with P3 and P5 following).
PowerQUICCs suitable for MorphOS are the 603e/G2_LE based PowerQUICC II and the newer e300 based PowerQUICC II Pro families.

    > The 8610 is possibly the best performing 32-bit PPC implementation

Nah, that would either be the 8641(D), which you mentioned, or the 7448, depending if memory speed or core speed is considered more important. And btw, *all* Freescale PPCs are 32 bit ;-)

Looks like you are quite knowledgeable regarding freescale's product line, or at least you come across that way. I guess I will count on you to let us know when something really interesting comes out that might make a good chip to base the next MorphOS computer on.

I can't remember how I stumbled across that site and read about those chips, but most of it is over my head.

freescale.com -> "See all" [products] -> "Power Architecture"

...would lead to that specific page :-)

Andreas is much more than knowledgeable: He hunts for interesting news and remembers about a four months old thread that mentioned somethig about it. That's impressive. I've been into forums since many years, and never found such a person.

In all, you can almost feel free to forget about anything, that Andreas will point you exactly to it afterwards. Of course, that's a bit too much, but it's my impression.

I've asked Andreas severral times about his metodology, to be able to do these amazing things. It seems he remembers ewverything! I wonder if he has some kind of knowledge database or something.

Not having an amigaworld.net account I'll ask here.

    Zylesea claimed over there:

"there are plans to move QorIQ to 64 bit."
    http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=31439&forum=33&start=60#555581

Anybody know anything about this or can provide a reliable source?

As you can also see, Andreas ignores me systemmaticaly. It's curious, I've asked him a couple of times, about how he organizes so much information.
In another thread he gave some details, and made me think it's all in his head, which I find amazing, and would like to know more.

While the thread topic is "Content Processing" it's not about me or any other forum member doing so, but about Power Architecture CPUs ;-)

    > he [...] made me think it's all in his head

This, and an ability to make proper use of search engines.

    > I [...] would like to know more.

    There's nothing more to it.

Seems the first QorIQ P3 and P5 sub-families's members are going to be announced shortly.

Nice table on page 38 (document dating August 2009(!)):
    http://www.ebv.com/fileadmin/products/Press_Print/Brochures/MIP/2009_08_11%20MIP%202_2009_lowres.pdf
    (including P3040, P3041, P3042, P3043 and P5020)

QorIQ roadmap on page 36 (as of April 2010):

(and an interesting i.MX roadmap on page 26)

    Edit: P3041 and P5020/P5010 got quasi-announced.

People, get a look at these new CPUs. Not primarily aimed at desktop computing, but very serious looking!

I bet an evaluation board costs a fortune... A constant mistake from freescale.
