Efika + MorphOS 2.1 = Nothing

After trying 2.0 upon release and now 2.1, I've come to the end of my rope. I've read a few other posts with no real conclusions, so I'm asking for help.

I have successfully used both efika images to run the installer and get MorphOS copied to the hard drive, but that's when it all goes wrong. I have never.. not once.. gotten the efika to boot from the hard drive beyond the splash screen. It just sits there with the "MorphOS 2.x loading..." message at the bottom of the screen.

I've tried with any number of USB devices attached, and even none with the efika set to auto boot. Does anyone have any suggestions other than 'reset it a few times and cross your fingers' ?

Mine with 2.0 installed doesn't always get past the loading screen, but usually a reset works. It was recommended to me to not have any USB devices plugged in when booting, but you say you've done that.

I haven't got a clue how to do it, but perhaps updating the firmware might do the trick?

Do checked "bootable" at the partition from which you
    want to boot?

It actually has the latest available firmware (1.3 20070122)

However, I just came back to it after having left it on for quite some time and it had managed to boot and let the 30 minute trial expire. So now I am attempting to see how long it actually takes for it to boot.

This bothers me though, since it makes it less and less likely I'll ever actually buy MorphOS.... beyond the fact that it's terribly overpriced to begin with.

I double checked the bootable flag, as last time I went through terrible pains getting the drive set to RDB instead of MBR, and it was set to bootable.

But the compulsive nature in me saw fit to toggle the setting from bootable and back again. I saved it once more and now.. for the first time this thing has booted.

    It's about time.

    Thanks for the replies.

I installed MorphOS 2.1 on my Efika yesterday. My Efika already has Xbuntu installed on it. I downloaded the Efika 2.1 update file and 2.1 iso and saved then to a USB pen drive. Initially I could not get the Efika to recognise the pen drive. I copied the files to a USB HDD and this time I was able to install 2.1 to an unused part of my internal HDD. However, on re-boot the Efika booted to Xbuntu as normal. After a little bit of investigation I found that I needed to halt the initial boot and manually boot the boot.img which was on my ide:2 partition. The actual boot process was very fast and within a few seconds I had MorphOS displayed on my monitor. I suppose I will need some kind of boot menu to allow me to select either MorphOS or Xbuntu on initial power-up? Can someone point me in the right direction please?

My initial impressions are very favorable. MorphOS preforms much faster on the Efika compared to xbuntu, which was really very slow and unresponsive. It has given my Efika a new lease of life. Well done!

my efika didn't like to boot morphos with one of my apple-keyboards attached
    (hangs in load screen forever).
no problems with an other keyboard...
now if i had a better firmware i could even boot from internal hd instead of
    loading the kernel from usb...

Originally, I had no problem getting online, however I found that browsing the web with Firefox was very slow. I also made the mistake of auto updating my Xubuntu installation and I lost some of the Networking utilities. I have since changed my ADSL broadband modem/router and have not been able to reconfigure Xubuntu to use the new modem. However tbh I did not really try to fix the problem as I found that running Linux on the Efika was not a pleasant experience. That is why I am particularly impressed by the performance of MorphOS 2.1 on the Efika. So much so that I havs just paid for another license.

    @TrevorDick,

I am new to MOS and have just purchased an EFIKA from Directron and a 9250 from Tiger Direct. Although I have had some questions and troubles, I did get 2.1 installed and booting from the internal 4gb hdd and liked what I saw. I have paid for and received my keyfile, but installing it has not been successful YET!

I was hoping to run some flavor of Linux on my EFIKA as well as MOS2.1 on separate partitions of a 60gb hdd that I have just removed from a dead Mac PowerBook. Do you have any other suggestions on which Linux distribution might be better than Xbuntu on the EFIKA?

I have not been feeling well, so I have not worked on my EFIKA in almost two days, but hope to get back to it tomorrow.

Concerning linux, I would recommand DRI for graphics. X is utterly slow.

Have a look at www.powerdeveloper.org. There is a thread about a linux distro including DRI & QT.
