    Hi

Getting a bit feed up of having to put everything on my Efika on a USB stick from my Laptop. So is it possible to use a USB CD-Rom drive with an Efika? Will Posideon recognise any particular types?

    Thanks in advance

I also use a flash drive to transfer files to my Efika. I have a USB to 44pin IDE that I use too and I seem to recall using a different USB to IDE CD that worked fine with SmartFirmware. btw For some reason I have quite a few such interfaces lying around so email me if you're interested.
PPC assembly ain't so bad... ;)

USB CD/DVD/Rom or burners work like a charm on Efika, i tested 2 of them and had no problem, it works right from the OpenFirmware. But it's slow of course (USB1).

SoundSquare what models have you tried? Are all USB CD/DVD/Rom drives USB1?

yes they are, they will only work in slow mode.
I tried a Liteon DVD burner and a Iomega old CD burner.

don't ask me for more details, i don't have them anymore (nor the efika). but they should all work.

I tried a Memorex External CDRW. It worked as a cd-reader well enough. I did not, however, do anything resembling a speed test.

Why not just use a standard IDE CD drive as the slave device on the ATA port? All you need is a gender changer for the 44-pin ATA port, and a suitable cable.

    no way.
As it has been discussed here and on ppczone.org before, and as BPlan stated themselves, adding a slave device on the ATA port works very badly as the IDE controler can only tolerate a short wire between the device and the IDE port. This maximum length is already reached between the controler and the IDE plug where you connect your HD.

Efika users use USB CDrom drives when needed because it's the only working option.

Yer don't want to use an IDE drive for the above reason. Anybody know if one of the cheap external USB CD-Rom drives off ebay (direct from Hong Kong) will work? They seem to be below 20 euros.
