Is a 64MB Radeon 7000 enough?

I imagine that when MorphOS2 is out there will be some demand for the Efika systems I am building but...

Should I continue using 128MB 9250 gfx cards or would the potential MorphOS on Efika users out there be satisfied with 64MB Radeon 7000 cards?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from Australians and New Zealanders as it's much easier for me to support you guys.
PPC assembly ain't so bad... ;)

The 9250 uses less electrical power and is more powerful than the 7000. There's no good reason to use the 7000 for new systems. Both, the 9250(SE) and the 7000 are dirt cheap.

Anyone knows the minimum specs of GFX HW (like GPU, memory) to use the new 3D GUI functions in MorphOS 2.0?
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :-)
MorphOS NG will be AROS done right! :-)

Well nobody knows the true spec for MOs 2.0 as there is still no official feature set/requirements..

I would suggest do get a card with 128 MB or more as MorphOS 2.0 transparency needs more gfx memory and even games like VGP need more memory to keep all textures.

256+ MB are not yet supported due some problem with OF AFAIR. Such cards work fine, but just with 128MB available and the rest is unused.

Well, you spend your time whining, whining and then even some time
whining. Most of the time whining for specs, feature sets, and so on.

While people that can behave read the informative posts that the team
every now and then gives, which makes perfectly sense (even bigger
teams release feature sets only just in time for the official
release..). In this case we know, because jacaDcaps, the developer of
layers3D, told us, that the requirements for layers3D are:
"a Radeon with at least 64MB".
I had just to check 1 thread, the one called
    "MorphOS 2.0 status".

    Kind regards,
    Andrea

What versions of OF have you tried? IIRC Bplan has a few unreleased versions internally that Genesi was using..

and thanks for the info :)

    hey guruman

Yeah losers like us who troll mz can gather the info. But what about ppl casually interested in Morphos? Dont you think there should be a feature list or updated website? I speak about the community, platform and business here. Not fanboy perspective.

256MB ram, G3 600 + an R200 based Radeon with at least 64MB ram is a minimum imo. G4 for full comfort. While it also works on Efika, it will generally be too slow for normal usage. Layers3d currently need a lot of ram (additionaly to graphic card's memory), so the 128MBs of the Efika aren't really enough.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated! :-)

Does the need for "normal" RAM decrease if GFX card RAM increase, and at the same pace (i.e. if 128MB is added on GFX side then 128MB less is required on the computer side)?

BTW, I understand the "the more the merrier" logic when it comes to specs. But still, I have also seen many of those online videos of Efika's using Layers3D, and while I understand your concern from *your* point of view (I understand your high standards and demands as a developer), I must say that I'm still very impressed of what I saw in those videos! Didn't look too shabby in my eyes, not at all, it looks very usable!

But OK, I don't have your reference points of using Layers3D on G3 and G4 Peg's. Of course everything is better there, it would be strange otherwise. It will be interesting to see with my own eyes how this works, and compare, since I have all the machines you mentioned! :-) I only hope that the licensing model is going to allow me to install MorphOS on at least 3 of my compatible machines I have here without taking out a second mortgage on the house...

BTW, do you have any ideas (theoretically) of how Layers3D would perform on a 5121e with its built in DIU and 3D GPU? I understand that it's a matter of RAM in this case as well, but just looking at the specs of the "PowerVR MBX Lite" - if enough amount of memory is present, wouldn't this core be enough?

While Layers3D isn't a *fundamental* thing to have, I think it's still a *very* cool feature, and I think it would be really cool if *all* aspects of MorphOS would at least have as a goal to be able to run at least adequately on these kind of low power SoC's. And BTW, 256MB? Any chance of working towards lowering that requirement? I mean, in one of my pegs, 256MB is all I got, and it would be nice to be able to use it for other things than the MorphOS GUI...

    No.

I don't know the specs of this thing. It's mainly about the memory bandwidth and 2d/3d acceleration.

Yes, this will hopefully change at some point.

By a minumum of 256MB I meant a minimum amount that will let you use your machine without worrying about the mem consumed by l3d. It isn't a minimum required just by l3d alone.

i'd like to ask for some help:

i wanna buy a new radeon 8500 for my peg.
recently i've got one with 64mb (and a terrible loudy cooler, thats why i wanna replace it). i could buy a new one with 128mb but that one is an Le.
does it matter in the morphos context?
it is better to choose a non-Le version or the Le will be perfectly enough for morphos 2.0?
    thanks

The non-LE will be more faster than the LE but the 8500 LE is one of the best card for the Pegasos, so ;-)

/me just buy a 8500 LE with 128 Mo in order to replace his Radeon 8500 with 64 Mo ! Maybe "the greats spirits encounter" ;-)

So, you would recommend not to use Layers3D at all on Efika?

Speed-wise, it was ok (faster than 2D at least! ;-) ), but stability seems to be worse than with Layers2D. Do you have any idea what the reason could be?

And which Radeon cards have a R200 chip?

I'd like know which is the best graphics card for running MorphosOS 2.0 on Efika. Which was the one most tested?
