Memory problem

Has somewhere been told that the PegII (G4, 1Ghz)
may not like two 512 MB memory modules ? If so,
please forgive MY bad memory ;)

I just wanted to give 1 GB ram to my Peg, where
previously two 256 MB modules were mounted and working
without problems. My local computer shop had no more
1GB DDRs available, so I decided to buy two identical
512 MB modules thinking it wouldn't make difference.
(The 512 modules are the same brand as the old 256 ones
    previously mounted, VData, labeled DDR400(3) 512MX16 )
Unfortunately they seem not working properly, making
the system very unstable, and in fact memtest confirms
random memory faults. Both seem perfectly working if
mounted alone or together with any of the old 256
modules, reaching 768 MB without any problem.

So I ask, is that a known issue ? Might a single
1GB module help here or I'd run into troubles the same ?

    Thanks
    &

Yes, two memory modules can produce such behaviour you described. I also have 2x256MB now, works fine. But a local Peg2 user had troubles with 2x1GB he tried to install. One 1GB module alone worked for him flawlessly (and any of the two modules), though. So yes, it's more safe to install only 1 memory module, while two modules might or might not work together.

Thanks for your testimonial. I think I will definitely
ask my dealer to change the two 512 MB modules with
one 1GB as soon as it will be available. Good-sad stuff
    to know :(

Well with OF 1.2 it varies. You may get lucky and find 2 1gb modules to work, but chances are not. Bplan never released 1.3 which was used in some ODW units and has different memory timings AFAIK. However, it introduces other problems as well so I guess it wasnt ready for the user base.

ps What would you need 2gb Ram for on your machine?

Hi Elena, in my signature you can see that I have 2x512MB DDR333 working good, no problems at all, before I had 2x256MB and same behavior, no problems, so I guess I?m very luck 8-) with memory modules in peg2, maybe a good SF version :-? .

I have also had the same problems. I can use one 512 module, but two keeps my machine from even booting to the OF prompt. One installed is fine.
