So "this weekend" is Oct 21,22? If so, how come there isnt a online preorder for the EFIKA? How much is the pre-order for? ($100?) Do we get a MOS 1.5 BETA along with it? LOL

First off, the news article is one week late. The meeting already happened last week. You can see videos of it here (in German!)...

    http://people.freenet.de/horrorkid73/torrents.html

That said, the bit about the preorder was misinterpreted. Axel Knabe, who demonstrated EFIKA at the meeting and is a reseller himself, was simply asking people to sign up if they are interested in the hardware. Based on the list of people, he should be able to gauge how many units he might have to order in the future. MorphOS was not part of this. And the price for EFIKA was 250EUR (for the plain mainboard) and not $99.

Please get that silly $99 figure out of your head, its not going to happen. This is a small company not a Tawianese eletronics firm..

    @magnetic:

I'm not the one who suggested $99.. I read it either on BBRV's blog or one of his posts.

Well, it always amazes me that bbrv keep doing this. Who is going to buy Efika, or anything else, at a realistic price if they keep giving people the idea that it may come for cheap "soon"? Well, of course it is not marketed to consumers, but anyway.

You havent learned from all the fireworks around here lately? ;-)

I think $99 is their TARGET and goal, not the current reality..

    299 EUR initial price.
99 EUR is a goal for "poorer" countries -
not the "Western" world. And only with a
large order. This has been mentioned
    several times in his blog.

With very large orders (like the 50.000
ODM ordered) the price could drop alot
    even for the "Western" world.

Uhm, Pegasos II G3 was 299 EUR...
The Kurobox with USB2 and Gigabit is 149 USD already and there are other low cost PPC devices,
so why do you think EFIKA should be that expensive and which components would justify such a price?

The Kuro Box doesn't come with a hard-drive, and I also read that it is more for expert Linux users and not regular end users. We are talking $299 for a complete Efika system with memory and sound card and graphics card right?

We are not. Sound is on-board as it is on Pegasos mainboards. A graphics card is included with neither EFIKA nor a Pegasos. Of course, there are plans for on-board graphics but that would not be the same revision of EFIKA as seen at the Amiga Meeting...

That pretty much leaves only 128MB of memory being included. In terms of expandability and raw CPU power, EFIKA is certainly not a better deal. But it is not supposed to be. Its merits are the extremely small form factor and very low energy consumption which make it an interesting product for various uses. If those two features are important to you as a desktop computer user, is an entirely different matter altogether.

At 250EUR / $299 as offered in the Genesi webshop, I do not see many existing Pegasos owners buying an EFIKA. For some business customers, however, it can be exactly what they are looking for - even without a $99 price tag.
