We put a documentation about a heatpipe-modification for G4-Pegasos online on PPCNUX. If you are interested:

Since my second-hand Radeon 8500 has a very noisy fan (that must be near EOL), I was checking whether to buy passive cooling for it AND the CPU, or just replace the noisy fan.

Some very quick calculations show that you have more than enough natural convection in most cases to ensure that a passive cooling solution is possible (Note: BEWARE of heat-dissipation figures that are announced, especially in passive coolers, since they are VERY dependent on airflow and room temp), so I've started checking some French forums where people where taliking about this kind of mod but applied to GFX cards.

Conclusion: even with 200 gr coolers, some people experienced "loose" slots after 6 months-1 year, and had to change their motherboards (the plastic slots are simply not designed to take the extra loads).

For the time being, I will stick to active coolers since the situation can only be worse for CPU cards (in GFX cards there is a metallic, bolted structure to take part of the loads).

    Try Arlt or Fort Knox.

    Hi DarthX,
they did not tell me ;) .

Winterhunter, thanks for your input. Maybe
it then would be wise to remove the pipe, when
transporting the Pegasos, although it has some
fixation on the tower-lid in my case.

I just posted on pegasosforum.de a shop in DE, where
they still can be bought. Here is another one, that
    Arno just found.
    http://www.fortknox.de/shop/_i.php?s=440710b2ef3d8&art=66209&h=AeroCool&kat=&w=&h=AeroCool&sa=

Cheaper too, only 23€ + shipping.
    Bye!

    Hey guys

    Cyber: cool project..

    Public Service Announcement :-D

Please, please everyone should periodically check their G4 cpu card fan to make sure its operating properly. It seems that the fan on the second gen peg 2 cpu cards is rather prone to failure, especially how much we use are machines 8-)

Just recently as I was perfoming routine inspection and clening of my cpu fan only to discover that it was having a hard time spinning up to speed. After removing the cpu card for a closer look I noticed that where the fan power card plugs into the cpu card it was was somehow becoming very hot and appears to be burning a trace on the cpu card as well as melting the solder pad ! After the horror of this revelation wore off, I quickly pulled the whole fan heatsink assembly and replaced it with a sweet Vantec copper Cpu fan/heatsink combo with power coming from the 12v. Not only does the card look much cooler, but it is alot cooler, and near silent! I can post pics of the mod if you guys want to see it :-)

So please guys check your cpu cards for fan failure, malfunction, or other weird serious problems like I encountered.Naturally any mod doen to the cpu card like alternative active cooling or passive cooling in this thread probably elimantes your warranty with bplan...

When moving the machine, remove the pipe (or the whole CPU card). For the rest of the time, try to fix the heatsink (at the pipe level if possible) to the computer chassis (steel cables or wires should do the trick if they are tight enough).

I will probably go for this kind of modification myself in the next weeks (the original fan looks unreliable - and lots of people report that it is).
