First no i do not have my cpu overclocked infact i dont believe in overclocking.

I have a 1ghz cpu with a heetsink fan setup and its just running really hot. ANy ideas suggestions of heatsink to fix this. DOes genesi sell by some chance a fix to this. It really makes me paranoid when a cpu is hot. DOnt like at all. Its running hotter then my amdxp 2200+!!. Anyhow any thoughts and suggestions would be much appreciated.

Sorry about your troubles.. here is some suggestions:

    1. DOnt panic be organic :-D

    2. YOu can replace the org heatsink/fan combo with a good PC Gfx card fan mod. For instance, Vantec makes some very nice coolers for the GPUs and they are copper and quiet.

Be sure to understand once you modify your CPU card it probably will void the warranty afaik

    How hot the CPU gets?
I have here up to 63°C running dnetc 24/7 in a very small
    Tower.

    You could try this:

    http://www.algonet.se/~chaozer/images/matxcase/06.newheatsink.jpg
    http://www.algonet.se/~chaozer/images/matxcase/08.newcooling.jpg
    http://www.algonet.se/~chaozer/images/matxcase/09.almostdone.jpg

This works very well for me ... Runs alot cooler than the original solution. As an extra spice it also cools the memory dimms.

I have the same solution as ChaoZer, Zalman NB47J:

    peg2inside.jpg

The 12V 80mm fan is running at 5V, so it's totally silent and easily cooler than with the stock heatsink + fan. The system runs dnetc 24/7.

PS. Yes, I could have actually attached the fan, but it works just fine as-is and I'm a bit lazy... ;-)

Exactly! Have you measured the temp, or are you just touching the cooler with your fingers? Because ...

... 63°C will actually feel *very hot* when you touch it with your fingers, but it's still some 40°C *below* the announced 105°C that Freescale announce as the 10 year reliability level ...

    Or did I misunderstand something?

Edit: BTW, I have the same cooler as Piru and ChaoZer, with a large (silent) fan blowing some air *at real slow RPM* just to ensure some kind of air flow through the pins, since I also have an ultra quiet PSU ...

    Yes you did.
The 105°C is measured from inside the core, not from outside. If you get 105°C from the outside the CPU is already long dead.

Yes, junction temp. You can only get reliable temp readings very close to the junction. Anyone measuring CPU temp far away from that will get erroneous readings.

Yeah. I guess the only really reliable measure would be from inside the CPU itself. If the temperature is measured from the heatsink you get much lower numbers already.

Hmm, maybe it would be possible to drill a thin hole in the heatsink, from one side and inwards, very close to the base, so the sensor gets in the middle, right above the junction (and then perhaps fill the whole with some kind of thermal paste or I don't know what). That should give quite good readings?

Nah, I have other things on my to-do list ... ;-)

WOW thanxz for the great pictures, I was thinking in my sleep last night about this and was wondering about a video cooler. THe heat issue is probly partly due to the fact ive been doign alot of cpu intensive things to test it =), but untill I get a better cooler im goign ot have to halt that.

HOw do I know its hot?
Well this is not scientific, but ive been usign omputer since i was seven and I know how hot something suppose to feel. And when an amd 2200+ is much cooler to the touch then a g4 1ghz somethign wrong. ITs runnning about 135f degrees I would guess I dont know celsios or even how to spell it =) typical USA ignorance on that. Yes i do know a chip can get to upwards of 180F, But ive learned that cpus run better under 110. ITs actually a noticably difference. Atleast it is on a amd proccessor. I dotn really know enough about these g4 other then since they first came out I really wanted one =). Any how I really appreciate all the pictures gave me soem good ideas. SOme day ill habve show picutres of my case =). it looks pretty cool my wife spent alot of time picking it out. drove 200 miles to get it to =)> YEah well it was on the way from the hospital, but still makes for a good story. 4 frys stores and 200 miles later lol. Oh this is off topic, but ive been real sick last 3 days and I a plus it gave me the time to really serriosly play with my morphos =) and learned alot it just keeps getting better the more I learn on it.

    Not really...
It is amazing at which temperatures this CPU can run and not even crash. ;-)

Back when I used my A1200 more often and still had it in the original case, I built an external case for my CDRW-drive from legos.

I also had (well, still have) Aura sampler that connects to PCMCIA slot. I built the CD case "around" it, so that it couldn't be moved much at all. And then I added some blocks to front and back to get the drive higher & around it, so it wouldn't move (too much, at least)

Too bad I don't have any pictures of it at all... :-(

Oh ok, its liek the old real cpus then when things were made well =).

THats good to know I wont worrya botu it to much then. Thanx for the info I was nto sure I just what the exact heat specs are on a g4.

I use to do alot with legos and I never thought about doign that, but thats a good idea. IF I did not give my legos to my brother I woudl use em now just for the look =)
