At the freescale technology forum the availability of the 7448 in volume was officially announced for October. Bulk orders of 1 Ghz 7448 will be available for a charge of about 100 US$/unit, prices for higher clock rates are not told yet.

The 1 - 1.3 Ghz should be to cooly passively relative easy. Energy consumption should be around 10 - 12 Watts for these clocks.

Overallperformance of the 7448 in comparision to the 7447(A) has been risen:
Better Altivec, doubled 2nd level chache (now 1 MB)...

    Nice news!

I don't think Apple's decision will be as fatal to the PPC manufacturers as some people likes to think. Only a very small part of their profits comes from Apple's business AFAIK. I don't have any exact numbers however, so feel free to correct me ...

General Motors, Cisco, Nintendo and other big companies.
and that's before the next gen consoles start...

It was a few percent of Freescale's sales, I doubt it'd even show up on IBM's balance sheet.

those campanies didnt buy the G4 ships as far as i know. they bought the other ones. and nintendo used a G3 modded for the game gube (since i think that is what u are refering to) and that is produced by IBM not freescale

Buy one now, that is my recommendation. It currently has a price of only $799 (ONLY TEMPORARY) for a *complete system* with good spec hardware. The Pegasos has *never* been this cheap, and who knows if it will ever become this cheap again? Buy one now at this price and start using it right now, and then later on, if you think it will be necessary, you can always upgrade the CPU. But chances are you won't think it's necessary at all, especially if you run MorphOS. Lots of MorphOS users are quite happy with their 600MHz G3's even! :-)

    MorphOS *flies* on a 600MHz G3! :-D

bbrv stated somewhere that Apple gave 3% of Freescale's sales, IIRC. Well, to believe it or not, it's everyone's own decision. :-D I think it's at least close to the real value, and let's not forget: G4 was still in use in Apple's best selling models, like iBook, Powerbook, and eMac. So i find a bit ironic, that Apple sued IBM for their change to Intel, while they still sold (and also currently sell) most of their computers with Freescale CPU inside...

Anyway, i think it's a fact that with Apple's move, the Pegasos/ODW became much more important to Freescale, than it was before. Not because it's selling in millions, but it's the last desktop computer built on a Freescale CPU, still selling worldwide, and has official support in some mainstream OS (ie. Linux). And this is huge additional value, while it costs practically nothing for Freescale, because the Pegasos uses standard chips primary made for embedded use. And according to the last happenings, Freescale seems to realise this, fortunately. Still a long way to go, but the beginning seems good. :-)

Is there any possibility for upgrade to 1.7 Ghz with this new processor?

In other words, giving back your 1.0 Ghz processor from where you bought it and buy the new 1.7 Ghz one, and pay the difference.

    I hope yes :-D
