The Freescale/Genesi China effort is mentioned once again, this time in the March 15 issue of the "Freescale Semiconductor Update" newsletter:

"The China Software and Integrated Circuit Promotion (CSIP) Center, a division of the Ministry of Information Industry (MII), and Freescale Semiconductor have announced plans to establish a joint evaluation lab based in Beijing. The lab's purpose is to support the development of alternative computing platforms leveraging the open Linux® OS and Freescale’s processors based on the PowerPC™ architecture. The lab will be equipped with Freescale's PowerPC processor-based development boards and workstations, such as the Pegasos II workstation from Genesi, as well as development tools, such as Freescale's CodeWarrior™ Development Studio.

'Freescale’s strong relationship with China will continue to grow,' said Michel Mayer, Freescale's Chairman and CEO. 'It’s a thriving market with an innovative workforce. Together, Freescale and China can create new possibilities in the world of computing and communications.'"

I guess this is no real news or anything such, but I thought it might at least be worth a forum post! I can't help that I feel a little "thrill" everytime Genesi or the Pegasos is mentioned in big contexts like this! :-) These Press Releases and newsletters reaches a huge audience of highly relevant people! :-)

If you don't subscribe on the Freescale newsletter already I can recommend you of doing so. Every once in a while you get pieces of interesting info! :-)

Soundsquare, is that irony ? China is the biggest country in the world with 1.3 billion people. IAH they have very few computers and are not really MSFT lovers.
What after China ? well all country where there is a real potential. The best will be to have this kind of lab in several country !
Keep going Genesi and congrats !!!

Believe it or not, China is changing a lot. Propaganda and censoreship...Well in some way yes but still think about everything happening in china this last year.
Also if only 0.5 % of them buy a Pegasos that's a real market !

    Very funny, but...

We are pretty sure that Admiral Alquier of Ecole Polytechnique might take some exception to having his head "corrupted."

Mao once said, "It doesn't matter whether a cat is black or white as long as it catches mice." Mao died in 1976. China was in ruin and it was the Communist Party itself and Deng that began the experiment in capitalism -- economic modernism and market liberalization under a monolithic political system. Sounds pretty pragmatic and so does Mao in retrospect. For the last few years, China has had a 9% +/- GDP growth rate. No other country in the world can compare with such success. Today, China is "communist" in name only and the experiment has changed and will change the country more dramatically than it already has. China has a huge population. The stark reality is the old system did not "feed the people." The power of freedom is that you get the chance to take care of yourself. The challenge for the broader society is to make sure that in so doing the freedom of one does not dominate others in an unjust way. There are big changes coming in China, but in line with the culture and step by step.

We are excited about having such a central role in the new Technology Lab. All said, the Taiwan situation is troubling. Hopefully, that still very monolithic government will yield in a measured way to the power of the population and not try to shift the focus to an "enemy" at the gate. What we need in China is empowerment. There is a internet savvy generation coming.

Can you say, Power to the People?! How about PeoplePPC?! :-D

    R&B 8-)

    Soundsquare:

Sure, China complies not fully to our western (Europe + the Americas +
Australia) ideas, but well, so doesn't the world.

I know, only because things can be worse doesn't make a bad thing turn
to good, but then... threre is still plenty I critizize in Germany
(where I live) or Europe or the U.S. (to critizize the latter became
recently really hip in the EU and, yes - there is a lot of
truth in it on *one* persective (I often share this perspective, but
I also try to keep a multi persepective view)).

BBRVs Mao sentence is not too bad, beside all ideals one has also
to be a bit opportunistic from time to time. And - regarding China - I
am slightly optimistic, the Taiwan issue is a drawback indeed, but on
the other hand they said to better their juristic system (death
penalties can now be fought - that is a progress, only a slow
    progress, but still a progress).
