In the latest "Freescale Semiconductor Update" newsletter from February 16, there is an article about the 7447A CPU being benchmarked on the new Digital Entertainment benchmark suite (DENbenchTM):

"Freescale has certified and published scores on EEMBC’s new Digital Entertainment benchmark suite (DENbenchTM) with the MPC7447A high-performance PowerPC® processor. “Running at 1.4 GHz, this processor cranks through video frames faster than a sous chef chops vegetables,” commented Markus Levy, EEMBC President, in the Winter EEMBC Journal. “And this doesn’t account for the additional benefits that can be provided through the processor’s AltiVec engine. This level of performance makes the MPC7447A perfect for high-end encoder applications (i.e., this is the machine that would encode the video streams before they are blasted out over the Internet).” The DENbench suite contains more than 60 discrete tests, including MPEG, MP3, JPEG and cryptography."

The IBM 750GX @ 1GHz was also benchmarked. Visit the EEMBC Web site to view the scores (there are also other kinds of benchmarks available from the left hand menu):

    Cool numbers! :-)

But none of these CPUs (except for the ADSP) can fit to smartphone or palm like computer...

I hope, it will change soon!

    Bye, MarK.

Two weeks ago I put together a table with the results and direct links to each benchmark run at PPCNUX.

Both the PPC systems are running with Marvell Discovery III at 166 or 200MHz FSB respectively (DDR333 and DDR400 memory).

seems 7447A is not so cool computing... 18W
    most hot one :-?

That's nothing! ;-) Besides, do you know any other PPC CPU (non-G5) with better spec's?

If I understand the MPC7447A Parametrics on Freescales 7447A product page correctly, the Power Dissipation ranges between 6-30W (Max) depending on clock frequency and stress, so I guess you could downclock it if you prioritize cool computing higher than computing power.

The 1.4GHz 7447A is the most powerful PPC CPU available. I think the Peg needs that! :-)

I understad it as it is the 7447A that's running at 166MHz FSB and the 750GX at 200MHz (since those are the max FSB's of the respective CPU)?

    The 7447A 1.4GHz is a little beast! :-D

Well the powerbook has a 1.67 gHz...so no the 7447A isn't the fastest out there, BUT I must confess that the peg need it.

What G4 CPU is used in the Powerbook then? I thought it was the 7447A? :-?

Well if it is the 7447A dear freascale doesn't show the fastest cpus for the public...

But actult I don't know, I thought that the maximum speed of the 7447A was 1.42 GHz. But I might be wrong.

It's the 7447B, as in the Mac Mini.

    @takemehomegrandma:

    Exactly.

I put the power consumptions of each chip version (according to Freescale) into a table for your convenience at PPCNUX.

    Thank you! :-)

That is very interesting information, and I see there are many other interesting articles at that site too! Too bad my German sind so schlecht (almost worse than babelfish ;-)).

I wonder what the chances of us seeing 7447A's in Peg II's
within the first Half of this Year? I am game whenever they appear,
especially if they are clocked above 1.3ghz :-)
