Radeon 7000 artefact

I have a Sapphire Radeon 7000 card with 32mb, and it works fine (solved the stability problem which occurred with Voodoo 3) but there are still some issues left.

When I move windows or icons around, I get some occasional artefacts, horizontal lines of 1 to 2 cm length. This is worse with higher resolution or more colors; 1024x768 with 16bit as well as 800x600 with 32bit appear clean, and up from this it gets more and more crappy.
1152x864 with 24bit is almost unbearable.

I found the Voodoo 3 somewhat stable still at 800x600 with 24bit, and someone suggested it might be a slightly busted power regulator on the card. With the Radeon, it appears like the GPU couldn't handle the higher resolutions cleanly.

Has anyone else noticed such behavior? Should I have gotten the Club 3D Radeon 7000VE card instead, or R9000 series, or should I have left ATI alone completely?

    Hi!

Just to let you know that I have a Radeon 7000 64MB, Radeon 8500LE 64MB and a Radeon 9200SE. They're all working properly and never got such artefacts.

I think 8500LE will not have 3D support yet, DVI support for 9200SE is working on some models (not mine yet).

Do you plan to use 3D apps?

I've seen that exact same problem on a completely different computer (PC) with a different OS, a different graphics card in a PCI slot...

    Looks like a hardware issue.

I got such gfx errors as well with a SiS305 gfx card. The suggstion by tokai to check if it really fits into the socket was not bad, but in my case it didn't helped sufficently. It happend with resolutions graeter than 1024x768 in 24 Bit. Using several instances of MPlayer at least increased the bug (these horizontal jitter stripes) to the worde behavior as can be seen at http://via.i-networx.de/gfxbug.htm.
At least the only sustainable solution was a purchase of a Club3D ATI 7000 64MB (36€). That one pretty rocks!
I don't know if the socket of the SiS was just crap or if the AGP interface of that card was somehow broken...
IIRC Elena reported similar things with her SiS.

    Ah I forgot to mention - I have a Peg1 with April1.

I forgotted say BirdieShoot graphics never has such artefacts!. I know dont use 1280x1024 resolution i think but graphics is i think much more complex than one window updating in AMbient screen where there is few windows on top.(What dont completely cover updating window which means for example Shell where i copy files...).

    > any other supported card is better than r7000.

    I'd prefer Radeon 7000 to Voodoo 3 anytime :-)

    > 7500 is muuuch better

Yes, but still to be avoided as not supported by TinyGL anymore.

    > and 8500/9000/9100/92xx etc even better.

    Absolutely.

See www.morphos-team.net for supports gfx cards for 3.7. MorphOS 1.4 supports up to Radeon 9250 but it is so old there is no reason to use it anymore. MorphOS 3.7 lets you have the latest OWB for example.

...and have only quarter (or half at best) the VRAM? I couldn't live with 16 MB VRAM. 32 is only just bearable and 64 is what I have now and am quite fine with.

    > it's faster than R7000

From hardware specs alone, Radeon 7000 should be faster than Voodoo 3. If it's the other way round on MorphOS, this would indicate excellent driver support for Voodoo 3 and/or lousy driver support for Radeon 7000.

    @Vanhapolle,

I have just looked at amigakit for amigaos 4.1, it is 125.72 euros for the pegasos edition, and do not forget shipping costs, http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=amigaos+4.1. Whereas the cost of morphos 3.x is 79 euros for old compatible computers as pegasos 1 and 2, www.morphos-team.net/faq section 'how much doe it cost ?'.
