No video output on my new Peg II/G4

My Peg II/G4 just arrived today from Liberty Tree Enterprises. Paul over there was nice enough to check out my board before shipping it, and says it was in working order.

So today, I installed it into an Aria enclosure, added an ATI 9600SE AGP video card, drive, CD and RAM, hooked everything up, powered it on and...no video. My monitor never saw a sync signal.

So I figured I had chosen a bad video card. I went out and bought a Radeon 9600, only to find that it was not a 3.3V card.

So I went and bought a Radeon 9200 PCI. Same thing. No sync.

At this point, I figure maybe my GEM flat panel LCD doesn't like the card. So I plug it into something else. It works fine. I plug a different monitor into the Peg II. Nothing.

I've tried booting without the CPU card. In that case, nothing happens (normally the drive spins up). I've tried moving the RAM and booting without RAM. Nothing.

I have a PS2 keyboard and mouse plugged in. I've tried with and without them. I've tried plugging a USB keyboard; that didn't help. I notice that when it first powers up, the ethernet (left) green light blinks once.

I'm really bummed about this. I waited much longer than I thought I was going to have to to get it, and now that I have it, I can't get the most basic functionality up.

Any help would be very much appreciated. I can be found online on AIM as "JetForMe". Thanks!

I'm afraid you don't like to hear the answer: Send the board back. It seems to be a hardware problem. I will have to send my board back, too. "Luckily" it is only the onboard Ethernet, so I can use the computer, and luckily I'm living in Germany, so the transport to Vesalia, BPlan and DCE is not so far...

I would take back one (or more) of those video cards. Then, pick up a nifty $15 serial null modem cable. Simply run that cable between the Pegasos and a second computer. Start the second computer, open a term program (amiga: AmTerm or such, Window: Tera Term Pro) Set the baud to 115200, 8N1, etc as seen on www.bplan-gmbh.de)

Once the term is set up and the cables connected, turn on the Pegasos. Have a look at the display. If you get some kind of prompt that says "Ikarus," then the nvram is messed up. It could also be bad memory (running this test should tell you so). Anyway, this should get you some basic information that can be cut and pasted into a forum.

On a side note: A null-modem cable is just good to have in general. One can never tell when they will need to direct connect two systems together ;-)

I wish you luck, and be sure to let Paul know of the problem.

    NO NO NO !!!

No need to send it back (atleast not yet) !

No video most likely means that it gets stuck somewhere while initalizing the HW. Most likely some weird RAM-prob.

Get a null-modem cable, connect the serialport of the Peg with another computer (hopy you got one ;-) ), and on the PC/Amiga start a terminal programm with the these settings:

    115200 bps 8n1

Now start the Peg and report the output it gives on the 2nd computer.

hmm.. i'm not so sure if it's really a board problem. Of course a nullmodem cable could help to enlight the situation.

I would bring back all video crads and go for a 9200 AGP. I don't know what do you want to do with your pegasos, but MorphOS does not support Radeon9600 yet. Under linux these crads could work (i have no idea about the driver situation there). And afaik the "high-end" cards also need extra power (did u connected them properly? was the card properly in the slot? Press twice to be sure!)). But firmware should appear, even with still in MOS/Linux unsupported cards afaik.

And when you install just a single RAM module then make sure it's in slot0 and not in slot1. slot0 is near to the cpuboard/marvell chip.

When I ordered my Pegasos a couple months back I was told to get a Radeon 7000. Why not try that? I havent had a single problem with mine.

Hmmm, sounds exactly like my trouble with my peg 1
. no video and hard drive wont spin up. I tried the null modem way and get nothing. When first powered on my keyboard lits blink once thou,so I do have power to the external connector, I wonder if powering on with out the battery would do something, I'll have to try that....Fingers crossed.

Darn! Removing battery and trying another video card and Null modem cable = zero.. Hard drive wont spin up when connected to IDE-0 and every combination I can think of.Looks like a complete loss.. Oh well! Any one have a Amiga One system to compare with the Pegasos?

When you say it is not supported, do you mean software alone, or is it incompatible with the Pegasos hardware? I just picked up an ATI Radeon 9600 128 AGP (non pro) since it was sale priced only slightly higher than the 9000. Should I not even bother opening the packaging?!?

9600 isnt supported in MorphOS yet, only up to the 9200. So its a good card to use in a Mac or a PC, maybe linux will support it too under the Pegasos.

So, thank you, Targhan, for this advice. I hooked up a Mac w/ZTerm and determined that my Peg II/G4 did not like the DIMM I bought. So I exchanged it for another of a different brand (both were PC3200, of course), and it worked great.

Here is the info I have on the DIMM that didn't work:

    On sticker:
    Legacy Electronics, Inc.
    87L5EDL0-1RDG 6439
    256 MB 32x64 PC3200 CL3 DDR

    On Chips:
    Lei
    LED32404TA-5
    32Mx4 DDR-7-T (also a date code)

The DIMM I replaced it with, for just a few dollars more, was from Corsair.

Now I'm having a problem where it will boot from the CD but not the hard disk. I'll post another thread on this topic.

Thanks again to everyone for informing me that I could get boot info from the serial port!

    @mann

Never buy cheap Ram.. Stick with Samsung, Crucial, Infineon, and the like. Dont get PNY or Kingston unless its the higher grade stuff.

Thanks. So, I bought a DIMM from Coast-to-Coast memory, but I can't tell who makes it. This DIMM did not arrive in time for me to play with my new board last Friday, so I went to Fry's and bought the cheap RAM, then got the Corsair RAM (which worked).

Coast-to-Coast's chips say have an interesting tic-tac-toe-over-circle logo, followed by:

    0306VR
    V58C2256804SAT5
    V001466IJAPA (that last I might be a 1 (one))
