    Hi there!

I want to change the passive cooler in my Pegasos G4/1GHz. Can somebody tell me the operational temperature of the G4?
What is the max temp allowed?

    Thanks!

    R.I.P. G4. :)

But honestly, unless you can make it operate below 85C, don't do it. Even better, aim for 75C. While those CPUs can operate hotter, the hotter it gets, the shorter its lifespan (and mind that it's already past it's intended life span).

It is running at 50-60 °C at 100% CPU load

    @Cego

you have to know exact CPU type code to know real maximal temperature. I.e. MC7447-RX1000LC ( "L" in this exact case means 1.3V / 105°C, but in other codes can has other meaning ).
Be careful, maximal G4 on-die temperatures very varies, most common are 85-105°C, but there are also 65°C versions.

Generally, I made many CPU swaps and overclocking, and good value for long CPU life is upto 45°C on CPU die ( i.e. cca 35-40°C on base of cooler) with 100% CPU load - this is my recomendation.

BTW: Have you seen how Sailor did her upgrade of Peg2 (including CPU cooler)?

My old AmigaOne XE G4 1Ghz did 50º-75º with the original fan and heatsink,
I changed it to a Zalman copper cooler/fan combo and got it down to 30º idle,
and according to the new owner of the XE he's getting 37º under heavy CPU load.

I had a passive cooled G4 for about 10 years. It was a mod, made by AKnabe, and worked completely silent. I returned the CPU board a few years ago as I did not require the additional CPU power anymore, as I replaced it with a PowerMac. I reinstalled the original G3.

So it is possible to create a passive cooled system, but you should know what you are doing. It was a stock board and not overclocked.

The cooler was massive and the CPU board had an additional support structure to not bend/break the slot on the board itself. Breaking just the CPU board is more expensive than a "new" Mac. Breaking all together is a disaster.

I would still replace it with a different system. Remember a PowerMac 933Mhz is still faster than the Pegasos2 due to RAM Speed.

I like the idea of having a dedicated custom system for MorphOS. The old Macs maybe faster, but a Pegasos inside a nice looking MicroATX case is much more appealing to me. The only option to replace my Peg2 would be a X5000, but that one is too expensive.

    On Topic:

I have now replaced the cooler of the G4 with a bigger copper heatsink and a faster (and noisier) fan.
Temperature dropped around 5°C in full cpu load.
