4K-upscaling via AV-Receiver?

    I consider replacing my ~12 yr old monitor with a new & more capable one. I am aware that most (all?) MorphOS-compatible ATI cards won't do 4K resolution natively. However most of the current AV-receivers provide a 4K or even 8K upscaling function, e.g. the Yamaha RX-V485 or Yamaha RX-V4A.

    Anyone tried that with his/her current MorphOS gear? Do all upscaled resolutions look 'good' or only upscaled 1080p ones? Or does an upscaled screen always 'look like shit'. ;-) Would be interested to hear some experiences if any!

    ATM my machines are on a Yamaha RX-V479 on my current 1080p monitor which looks good obviously as no upscaling needs to be done. Output of my A1200 via Indivision also looks good on this receiver.

    Shouldn't really need an AV-Receiver (might to more harm than good) for any decent 4k display to make FullHD look like FullHD looks on a big screen. These upscaling functions are designed to AI enhance movies/games and won't be able to do anything big on static/sharp images.

    As for how good that looks and how it looks with a mode that is not a straight multiplier just set a non FullHD mode on your current screen.

    If any scaling is involved, you will probably want to check that subpixel AA font rendering is disabled, which would likely look less than great otherwise because the display will deviate from the assumed subpixel layout.

    I have a nice Sony A/V receiver that has the upscaling feature so will give it a try and report back.

    @Kronos:
    True, I don't neet the AV-Receivers upscaling function 'cause a decent monitor should do that as well. But as I need an AV-Reveiver anyhow for connecting 4 machines to my 5.1 sound system I was wondering if the 4K-upscaling function of a capable reveiver would do better than the monitors' upscaling function. My current setup works well, just with 1080p - easily switch video/audio output between 4 machines, each getting 5.1 sound.

    @ASiegel:
    Thanks for the hint! I have not had a thought about this...

    Marvellous, I am eager to hear your findings!
