I think it's just overload of Javascript, they just stack Javascript scripts/modules over each other until everything chokes. Incompetence, lazyness, going the easy/first way they find, etc by web developers...
Disabling Javascript from OWB makes web surfing surprisingly lightweight, but then you have to swap it on/off per sites constantly...
