Any way to just boot from an bootable external CD/DVD USB drive?
Not sure if you can boot from an external CD/DVD USB drive, but if you haven't already tried cleaning your existing drive first, I would open up your 17" PowerBook and carefully clean all the dust out, specially from the cooling fans and heat sinks, and check the fans to see if their bearings are still good. Like I mentioned to another member here just a few minutes ago, I strongly suggest thoroughly cleaning the inside of any electronic equipment that is bought, or otherwise obtained 2nd hand (used). PowerBooks are particularly subject to over-heating problems, if not cleaned regularly.
Congrats on obtaining that 17", 1.67GHz G4 PowerBook, I have the last model made by Apple, with the high resolution LCD display, and think it is about the best hardware for running MorphOS.
AFAIK, replacement batteries and other parts are still available, but might not be for very much longer at reasonable prices, so I purchased a replacement "fan + heat sink" assembly and new battery for my PowerBook over a year ago, as well as some other part of the charging system, which I can't remember exactly what it is right now, just in case I need it in the future. I'm going to get a replacement SuperDrive as well, for both my PowerBook, and for my 1.5GHz G4 MacMini, as they seem to fail before anything else on these systems.
Good luck getting MorphOS3.10 installed, and also finding a replacement SuperDrive, and any other spare parts you decide to obtain.
MorphOS - The best Next Gen Amiga choice.
