It's possible to swap air cooling components on to older dual CPU 2.5 and 2.7 GHz AGP G5's.
But the PCI-E G5s all use a single CPU except for the quad core.
Do you think it would be possible to swap coolers from and older 2.3 dual CPU G5 to a later quad core G5?

I guess it should be possible to swap the coolers (as the CPU daughter cards seem quite similar), but the machine would go wild after that (the thermal sensors readings would be incorrect and the fans would spin to maximum speed). And you could do nothing to stop it, as thermal calibration would fail every time.

Or maybe I'm wrong? Seems like somebody has already tried that.

I'd guess this is the key part:

"I only have one CPU in it right now"

In order for it to work with a "full" Quad you'd need the passive single CPU cooler make contact with both CPUs AND than have it get rid of twice the energy it was supposed to handle.

Well, not really, since (at least from what's seen on the photos) he used only one heatsink. The dual processor models have two, so it would be one such heatsink for each CPU.

Bingo, that is what I was thinking. The air-cooled models use separate heatsinks, while the water-cooled models use one unified cooler.
But the CPU cards appear similar.

So you want to mount a heatsink from an AGP air cooled G5?

Cos, all air cooled PCIe G5s come with only 1 CPU (and I would suspect with only 1 heatsink).

That was the question, is the form factor of the early and late G5 similar enough to do that.
I have a 2.7 AGP model without cpus, but haven't pulled the cpus from the quad 2.5 yet to find out how similar the mounts for the boards are.
