OK, it seems like something similar to my problems. I know well the "grey screen and fans full". Don't pull the X850 out, just turn the computer off and on again - it's almost sure it won't happen the next time. But there may be artifacts present...
The entire screen was full of weird artifacts when I put the 9650 back in. Was very strange.
