The G5s only support SATA-1. It depends on how 'backwards compatible' the SSD or HDD is, which are SATA-3 nowadays. I tried a Crucial m4 SSD in my G5 11,2 (Linux) where it worked only in the lower slot and only most of the time but not always. This SATA-Controler of the G5s is rather moody...
