Then I don't understand the difference in support for HD 5450 vs. support for earlier cards than that, as modern 3D support in OS4 starts only with (higher) HD 7000 series cards.

The early X1000 systems included a HD 4650, yes, but it was upgraded in 2013 to HD 5450, or HD 6570 as more expensive option. In 2014, the more expensive option was upgraded to HD 6670. In 2015, when Warp3D for Radeon HD was released, the more expensive option was once more upgraded to R7 250X (with 3D support).
