Quote:Sorry, typo, yes we were talking about R400 cards (ie the X800XT), weren't we?
And FireGL X3 had some issues.
Frank used it, but it added to the difficulty of porting the R500s to MorphOS, and to the best of my knowledge that card died awhile ago.
Also, unless you are using a PCIe card, I wouldn't really recommend the R500s.
I asked Mark about creating drivers for those that didn't require an Apple rom, and he did a fantastic job of getting Atom bios recognized by MorphOS to initialize the cards (a much more elegant solution than I would have been able to come up with).
But he did the development work with an X1950Pro AGP card on his G5, and with the lack of a decent Linux driver model the AGP transfer rate is slow.
PCIe cards, no problem.
I don't know if Mark will revisit the AGP cards that require a bridge or not (I don't think he was happy with the results produced by the AGP X1950).
But there are AGP versions of the 2400Pro, 2600Pro (and some 2600XTs), the 3450, 3650, and 3850.
If drivers for any of those cards could created, we'd be able to move past the R400 and 500s.
Of course, I'm buying a PCIe platform, so I won't have to worry about it.
Speaking of which, waiting for the P5040 X5000 is a grind, when you know you could purchase the P5020 version right now.
I actually thought about buying a SAM460 to tide me over or purchasing a two core and then later reselling it when the four cores became available.
But right now I guess I'll just stick to my G5, my iBook, and the FW800 G4 that redrumloa is shipping me.
And I'll buy an RX470 video card for my PC at the end of February or the beginning of March to check out family.
It looks damned interesting. Purchasing an R7 or R9 card doesn't make sense to me with the RXs available.
Addendum - BTW, if you can find an Apple 9800Pro or XT those are worth having in a G5 MorphOS system (although for the price they command you might as well go with an Apple X800XT).
