Generally the 9600 are said to be avoided. 9800's (except from the SE version) should work. The best card on AGP is X800XT, I had one that did flash properly. Mind you, most PC gfx cards have 64 kB ROM chip that is too small to fit the unmodified 128 kB Mac ROM. It's probably best to replace it with a chip of greater capacity and then reflash. That way you can avoid a lot of trouble with the 'trimmed' Mac ROM.

There are some good guides how to flash, one of them on obligement.free.fr

Koszer is right, don't even try to flash a 9600, they don't work well.
And a genuine apple 9600 is dirt cheap (that would be your easiest solution).

9800s can be flashed, but there is some variation amongst those and I'd make sure you were getting one that is fairly close to the reference design (as some cheap R300 have very slow memory that won't work with a Apple ROM).
AND we've had a few users that have had issues with flashed 9800s (including a friend I sent one to) where they will work OK under OSX, but present some issues when used under MorphOS.

Also while R400s can be flashed (my first card, a FireGL X3 worked perfectly), they can be tricky to get to flash correctly (I leave that to a friend who is more familiar with these cards).
And both 9800 and X800XT PC cards require a molex 12v connection that the Apple cards do not need (requiring a power splitter off the DVD drive in order to function).

Apple X800XT are not hard to find, and don't command that high a price.
Currently there is one on eBay right now with a Buy-It-Now price of $49.95 (not sure what the postage would be to you), and a couple of others are up for auction.

    Isn't the FireGL X3 R400-based?

    http://morph.zone/modules/newbb_plus/viewtopic.php?forum=11&topic_id=8079&start=50

Sorry, typo, yes we were talking about R400 cards (ie the X800XT), weren't we?
And FireGL X3 had some issues.
Frank used it, but it added to the difficulty of porting the R500s to MorphOS, and to the best of my knowledge that card died awhile ago.

Also, unless you are using a PCIe card, I wouldn't really recommend the R500s.
I asked Mark about creating drivers for those that didn't require an Apple rom, and he did a fantastic job of getting Atom bios recognized by MorphOS to initialize the cards (a much more elegant solution than I would have been able to come up with).
But he did the development work with an X1950Pro AGP card on his G5, and with the lack of a decent Linux driver model the AGP transfer rate is slow.
    PCIe cards, no problem.

I don't know if Mark will revisit the AGP cards that require a bridge or not (I don't think he was happy with the results produced by the AGP X1950).
But there are AGP versions of the 2400Pro, 2600Pro (and some 2600XTs), the 3450, 3650, and 3850.
If drivers for any of those cards could created, we'd be able to move past the R400 and 500s.

Of course, I'm buying a PCIe platform, so I won't have to worry about it.

Speaking of which, waiting for the P5040 X5000 is a grind, when you know you could purchase the P5020 version right now.
I actually thought about buying a SAM460 to tide me over or purchasing a two core and then later reselling it when the four cores became available.
But right now I guess I'll just stick to my G5, my iBook, and the FW800 G4 that redrumloa is shipping me.

And I'll buy an RX470 video card for my PC at the end of February or the beginning of March to check out family.
It looks damned interesting. Purchasing an R7 or R9 card doesn't make sense to me with the RXs available.

Addendum - BTW, if you can find an Apple 9800Pro or XT those are worth having in a G5 MorphOS system (although for the price they command you might as well go with an Apple X800XT).

Yes, bigfoot explained why a while back.

Yes, AGP cards even made it up to R700 (HD 46x0). (Interestingly, PCI cards made it up to R800 (HD 5450).)

I wasn't aware of the PCI HD 5450s...interesting.

Good thing we will eventually have accelerated drivers for that, because the OS4 community seems to have skipped supporting earlier cards (even when some of their hardware was shipped with cards like the 4650).

I may have to experiment with a 5450.

Edit - OR...maybe not. The only source I could find for one was a Jaton card on Newegg.com that cost $139.95.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA70F4UE9752&cm_re=radeon_5450-_-9SIA70F4UE9752-_-Product

If anyone sees this product at a better price, would you post notice of it?

Even more interesting as you commented on those cards in that thread ;-)

How can OS4 support for them have been skipped when OS4-centric hardware was shipped with them? R700-based cards are supported by OS4 (except 3D, of course).

    > If anyone sees this product at a better price, would you post notice of it?

    - 64 EUR (= 68 USD), new, Amazon Germany
    - 45...50 EUR (= 48...53 USD), new, various vendors

Exactly, 3D, as in everyone that bought an X1000 (which included a 4650) had to upgrade their video cards in order to get one with an available 3D driver (and then they had to pay for the driver). ;-)

Funny the way those guys in that community work, isn't it?
I'm pretty sure that once I pay for MorphOS on an X5000, all future upgrades (including, of course, the video drivers) will be free.

BTW - That second listing isn't half bad, even with shipping.
I did manage to find a supplier with better prices in the US, but not that low.

Then I don't understand the difference in support for HD 5450 vs. support for earlier cards than that, as modern 3D support in OS4 starts only with (higher) HD 7000 series cards.

    > everyone that bought an X1000 (which included a 4650) had to upgrade their video

The early X1000 systems included a HD 4650, yes, but it was upgraded in 2013 to HD 5450, or HD 6570 as more expensive option. In 2014, the more expensive option was upgraded to HD 6670. In 2015, when Warp3D for Radeon HD was released, the more expensive option was once more upgraded to R7 250X (with 3D support).

    > I'm pretty sure that once I pay for MorphOS on an X5000, all future upgrades

    I wouldn't bet on that ;-)

I don't expect any changes from this policy in the current fork, but I DO expect to have to pay for the X64 port.

And on the sequence you mentioned, did any X1000s come with a video card that eventually received 3D support?
Obviously the original units with the 4650 are SOL.

And the part you don't get must be my wry amusement over the fact that we WILL have drivers for those cards (4650, 5450, 6570,6670, amongst others). ;-)

Yes, that's what I'm alluding to. It's not so much because it'll be for a new ISA but rather because you will have to register a new computer in any case.

I don't know whether anyone opted for the better graphics card in 2015. If anyone did, then yes. If nobody did, then no.

    > Obviously the original units with the 4650 are SOL.

...as is the X1000 as such, no matter the installed graphics card.

Even in case some X1000 owners didn't upgrade to 3D-supported cards by now, MorphOS isn't going to support the X1000 anyway :-)

Yep, it'd a shame for the X1000 owners like David that might want to run it, but since the X1000 was produced when Ben Hermans still had a direct connection with Aeon...
    Well...it just isn't happening.
    And I can understand that.

Oh man, the infamous duo: those damn rivets and non-caring postal workers claim yet another victim. The front can be done quite easily, but the back... Ouch!

You'd have to strip everything (and I mean everything, the gfx card, CPU(s), drives, fans, PSU, Mobo) to dismantle this element and try to fix it, but I wouldn't do this alone. It's not just "grab a rubber mallet and hit it where it sticks out", too much metal to reshape. And then - the riveting (or rather welding, or maybe if you have a strong two-component epoxy glue - with a bit of luck - glueing) everything in place... Wouldn't it be better to get a new case?

The best part that it even was not an overseas package it just traveled from another city to mine some kilometers, but they managed to destroy the case any ways. Getting another case could be a unnecessary expending maybe i will just let it like this and cope with it like a man :'( .

Found out the best way to fix the case issues on my G5, and was getting another one.
This time is a 2.5DP and have 8 ram slots.

    20170113_012319.jpg

    20170113_020728.jpg

A funny thing i found out my SSD ADATA 256megabytes is quite old, works fine in slot 1 on the 2.0DP but the 2.5DP don't detect it in any sata slot. Booth are A1047 models.

Theres any list of "tested" SSD for the G5 ?.

The G5s only support SATA-1. It depends on how 'backwards compatible' the SSD or HDD is, which are SATA-3 nowadays. I tried a Crucial m4 SSD in my G5 11,2 (Linux) where it worked only in the lower slot and only most of the time but not always. This SATA-Controler of the G5s is rather moody... :-(
