Black screen: Probably a wrong resolution? What to do now?

    Hello everybody.

I have a Mac Mini G4 with MorphOS installed and I've used it so far with a 19" (4:3) monitor. Today I got my HDMI-switch and a HDMI to DVI adaptor. So now the Mac Mini is connected just like my PC to the HDMI-switch which is connected to a 21" (16:9) monitor.

Everything was fine but the low resolution was a little bit unpleasant and there were little picture jerks from time to time. So I've tested the highest available resolution in the monitor settings and this seemd to solve all the problems. So I set up this resolution in the Screen settings. But after I've saved the settings the screen turned black and nothing happend. So I have restarted the Mac Mini but the screen was still black. :(

Now I don't know what to do. :(

Is there anything like a safe mode I can boot?

For starters, try to press the CTRL key during the boot process. This will force your system to use a resolution of 1024 x 768 (60 Hz).

Alternatively, try to boot MorphOS from CD...

HA! Thank you so much! :) I love MorphOS more and more, the more I learn. :) Such a simple solution! I've rebooted with pressed Ctrl key and set the same resolution again. Now everything is fine. :)

    EDIT:

It looks like it's not a good idea to use a HDMI switch with MorphOS. Theis seems to be the problem. After switching the input source and than switching back to MorphOS the screen is black.

If you search on the internet for "hdmi switcher" and "black screen", you will find plenty of people with Windows PCs, Macs or even Playstation consoles who have run into similar issues.

Switchers are often hit or miss, I am afraid. I hope you did not spend too much on it.

Does your monitor only have a single input port? The last time I saw a display with less than two ports must have been more than 10 years ago.

Damn it! Good to know. No it was a cheap one. Maybe this is the problem. ;)

Unfortunately I only have a HDMI and VGA port only. But I have tweo other monitors so I will connect it to another one.
